This type of stroke accounts for approximately 80% of all cases.

A hemorrhagic stroke occurs when a weakened blood vessel, or sometimes an aneurysm, ruptures and spills blood into the brain tissue or around the brain.

A TIA is a temporary blockage of blood flow to the brain. Symptoms of TIA can appear as weakness or numbness in the face or limbs, trouble speaking, loss of vision, and/or balance problems. Patients may refer to a TIA as a mini-stroke, but there is nothing mini about these events. They can an indicator of a much larger problem.

“Typically, our patients report that these symptoms are temporary, disappearing within 24 hours,” says Mercanti. “However, the symptoms of mini-stroke should not be ignored as they may be a precursor to a stroke, which can result in permanent disability or even death. It is imperative to get medical attention immediately.”

Risk Factors for Stroke in Young People

Hailey Bieber’s TIA has raised awareness of the risk for stroke in young people. This has started an important conversation about why stroke risk factors are different in the younger population.

Some stroke risk factors are similar across all ages, and include obesity, hypertension, diabetes, and heart disease. There are some lifestyle risk factors that are age-specific to young people, such as pregnancy or the use of birth control, a sedentary lifestyle, excessive alcohol consumption, or substance use disorders

Rare risk factors that can contribute to stroke in younger adults can include:

Patent foramen ovale (PFO), or a hole in the heart

Arterial dissection (a tear in the artery wall) in the neck as a result of trauma

Some blood clotting disorders

Substance use disorders

Migraine with aura

Use of birth control pills or other hormonal agents

Severe COVID-19 infection

In fact, Hailey Bieber shared that she had recently had COVID-19 and had started taking birth control pills. Follow-up testing revealed that she had a previously undiagnosed heart condition. She has since had surgery to close the hole in her heart.

Reduce Your Risk of Stroke at Any Age

“Younger people should be aware of their individual risk,” says Mercanti. “I tell my patients to get involved in their preventive health care and advocate for their needs. Be vocal, ask questions, and speak up if something feels off. ”

One important step to take when you are young is to find a primary care provider and get a baseline of your overall health, including testing your blood pressure and cholesterol.

At any age, you can make lifestyle changes to help reduce your risk of stroke:

Manage your blood pressure and cholesterol level: Eating foods low in saturated and trans fat and high in fiber can help to lower cholesterol. Limit your sodium intake to help control your blood pressure.

Maintain a healthy weight and get regular exercise: Being obese or overweight can increase your risk of stroke. Physical activity can help you manage your weight and even lower cholesterol.

Don’t smoke: Cigarette smoking can increase your risk of stroke.

If you consume alcohol, drink in moderation: Heavy drinking can raise your blood pressure. Men should drink no more than two drinks per day, and women should have only one drink per day.

“Knowing and maintaining your blood pressure and cholesterol numbers and regularly following up with your primary care provider can help you reduce your risk of having a stroke at a younger age,” says Mercanti. “As health care providers, we work with our patients to help prevent, screen, and recognize cerebrovascular diseases at a young age.”

About the Stroke Center at Cooper

As a leading academic health system, Cooper is transforming neurological care in the region with a new, dedicated Acute Stroke and Neuro Interventional Suite within its Emergency Department, the first of its kind anywhere.
