These types of fractures are very common in older people. According to the International Osteoporosis Foundation, one in three women over the age of 50 will experience a fragility fracture, as will one in five men over 50.

Fragility fractures occur most commonly in the spine, hip, and wrist. They may also occur in the arms, pelvis, or ribs. Adults who have had any type of fracture have an increased risk of additional fractures, especially within a year or two of the initial injury.

A hip fracture can be a serious injury, with potentially life-threatening complications. During recovery, a patient may be immobilize for extended periods, which can lead to formation of blood clots and decreased muscle mass. Post-surgical complications, such as infection and pulmonary embolism, may also contribute to high death rates.

“Fragility fractures are most commonly associated with osteoporosis,” says Kenneth W. Graf, MD, Director, Orthopaedic Trauma Program at Cooper University Health Care. “Therefore, optimal care of fragility fractures must include an accurate diagnosis and treatment of any underlying osteoporosis to reduce the risk for further injuries.”

Know the Risks of Osteoporosis

Osteoporosis means “porous bone.” It is a disease in which bone density is reduced, causing bones to thin, weaken, and become brittle. This, in turn, greatly increases the risk of bones breaking.

“Osteoporosis is most common in women after menopause, when it is called postmenopausal osteoporosis, but it can develop in men,” says Dr. Graf. “It may occur in anyone who manages a chronic disease with the use of certain medications, such as prednisone or cortisone. Given its influence in the risk of fragility fracture, osteoporosis may significantly affect life expectancy and quality of life.”

Postmenopausal women with a bone fracture should be evaluated for osteoporosis, which includes measurement of bone mineral density with a DEXA scan.

The main cause of osteoporosis is a low level of hormones, particularly estrogen in women and testosterone in men. Risk factors for osteoporosis can include age, gender, European or Asian descent, lower body weight and less muscle mass, a sedentary lifestyle, smoking, and a diet low in calcium.

“Many people with osteoporosis have no symptoms of the disease until they experience a bone fracture,” says Dr. Graf. “Treatment of osteoporosis at Cooper is tailored to your age, your overall health, the severity of your disease, and how well you can handle specific medicines or therapies.”

Dr. Graf advises men and women to understand the importance of proper diagnosis and management of osteoporosis as they age.

“Consider making lifestyle modifications, such as maintaining a proper body weight and starting a regimen of regular walking and other weight-bearing exercises,” continues Dr. Graf. “You can enhance your nutrition by cutting down on caffeine and alcohol, quitting smoking, and making sure to get enough dietary calcium and vitamin D.”

According to the National Institutes of Health, adults should get 1,000 mg of calcium per day, but that increases to 1,200 mg per day for women over the age of 50.

If you are at higher risk, Dr. Graf suggests taking steps to prevent falls in your home by installing handrails, especially in the bathroom and shower, using nightlights, removing area rugs, and using assistive devices such as a cane or grabber.

For more information on your risk of osteoporosis or a fragility fracture, make an appointment with one of Cooper’s Osteoporosis Program experts by calling 800.8.COOPER (800.826.6737) or using our online appointment form.

Osteoporosis significa “hueso poroso”.

Para leer en Español, por favor haga clic aquí A fragility fracture is a type of bone break that results from a low-trauma event, such as a fall from standing height or less.
