Sommer, MD, Program Director of the Dermatology Residency Program at Cooper University Health Care. “But there are times when our bodies undergo changes that increase that amount exponentially.”

Surgery, childbirth, high fever, stress, chronic infection, or a virus (like COVID-19) can result in temporary hair loss.

“This type of temporary hair loss is known as telogen effluvium,” Dr. Sommer says. “It typically begins about three months after the stressful event and can last for six to nine months before hair eventually returns to normal.”

Other causes of temporary hair loss include:

Chemotherapy and some medications for blood pressure and gout

Tight hairstyles that pull at the roots

Repeated and excessive use of harsh chemicals

Vitamin D and iron deficiencies

Restrictive diets and rapid weight loss

Abnormal thyroid function

High doses of vitamin A

“Once the underlying condition is addressed, hair will gradually grow back on its own over the course of a few months,” Dr. Sommer says, “although some people may choose to talk to their health care provider about adding topical medications or dietary supplements to encourage growth.”

Sometimes Hair Loss Runs in the Family

Hereditary baldness is the most common type of hair loss in both men and women. Androgenetic alopecia, as it is medically known, causes the hair follicles on the scalp to shrink and eventually stop producing hair. Shrinking can begin as early as the teen years, but usually starts later. About 25% of women and 50% of men experience some form of androgenetic alopecia by the age of 50 years.

In women, the first sign of androgenetic alopecia is an overall thinning or widening of the part. Men will see either a receding hairline or a bald spot at the top of the head.

Hair Loss and Autoimmune Disorders

Autoimmune disorders cause the body’s immune system to attack its own healthy tissue. In the case of alopecia areata (AA), the immune system attacks the hair follicles, which causes the hair to fall out.

“Most people with AA will have limited disease in which they lose and regrow small patches of hair. Few patients may experience complete hair loss over their entire body,” Dr. Sommer says. There’s currently no cure for AA, but in most cases the hair spontaneously grows back on its own, though recurrences are common.

“A health care provider may also recommend corticosteroids or minoxidil to help promote hair growth,” Dr. Sommer says.

Treating Hair Loss

A variety of therapies can stimulate the regrowth of hair. The best option often depends on the reason why the hair fell out in the first place.

Corticosteroids suppress the immune system, which is why they are sometimes used to treat alopecia areata. More commonly known as steroids, they are available as a topical treatment or an injection.

Minoxidil (Rogaine) is known to help with certain types of hair loss by encouraging growth, strengthening the strands, and stimulating hair follicles.

Platelet-rich plasma (PRT) involves removing plasma and platelet proteins from the patient’s blood and injecting them into the scalp where the hair is thinning.

Low-level laser therapy (LLLT), also known as red-light therapy, uses light to promote circulation and encourage follicles to grow hair.

Surgical hair replacement is more commonly used with men because they tend to lose hair in larger areas compared with the overall thinning that most women experience. The procedure is costly but can provide permanent hair restoration under the right conditions.

”If a patient is shedding more than the normal amount of hair or noticing thinning or bald patches, they should start by talking to their primary care provider or a dermatologist who can help determine the cause of hair loss,” Dr. Sommer says. “Once the cause is known, the patient and health care provider can work together to decide the best course of action.”

To make an appointment with a dermatologist at Cooper University Health Care, call 800.8.COOPER (800.826.6737) or use our online form.
