Protect Your Skin\u00a0From\u00a0the Sun<\/h3>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Sunburn may seem like a minor inconvenience, but too much sun exposure can cause painful burns, dehydration, and long-term skin damage. The sun\u2019s ultraviolet rays are\u00a0the\u00a0strongest between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m., so extra protection is important during those hours.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cPeople often underestimate how quickly they can burn, especially near the water where sunlight reflects off the surface,\u201d Dr. Nussey\u00a0says. \u201cEven on cloudy days, UV rays can still cause skin damage.\u201d<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Plan Ahead:<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0Use broad-spectrum sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher, apply it before going outside, and reapply every two hours\u00a0\u2013\u00a0or sooner after swimming or sweating.\u00a0Protective clothing, sunglasses, hats, and shaded breaks can also help.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">When to\u00a0Seek\u00a0Care:<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0Get medical attention if a sunburn causes severe blistering, fever, chills, dizziness, confusion, or signs of dehydration.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>2.) Stay Ahead of Dehydration<\/h3>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Hot, humid weather can make it harder for your body to cool itself. Whether\u00a0you\u2019re\u00a0exercising, working outside, or spending the day at the beach, dehydration can happen quickly\u00a0\u2013\u00a0especially in children, older adults, and people with certain medical conditions.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cDehydration, heat exhaustion, and heat stroke are all real risks\u00a0during the summer months,\u201d Dr. Nussey\u00a0says. \u201cHeat illness can become serious very quickly, so it\u2019s important to take precautions before symptoms start.\u201d<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Plan Ahead:<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0Drink water regularly throughout the day instead of waiting until you feel thirsty.\u00a0If\u00a0you\u2019re\u00a0sweating\u00a0heavily\u00a0or spending long hours\u00a0outside, electrolyte drinks may help. Alcohol and sugary drinks can contribute to dehydration.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">When to Seek Care:<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0Seek emergency care for confusion, fainting, symptoms that\u00a0don\u2019t\u00a0improve with rest and fluids, or signs of heat stroke. For mild dehydration that\u00a0improves with\u00a0fluids and rest, urgent care may be\u00a0appropriate if\u00a0symptoms persist.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>3.) Wear a Helmet\u00a0\u2013\u00a0Every Ride, Every Time<\/h3>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Bikes, e-bikes, scooters, and skateboards are common sources of summer injuries. Falls and collisions can cause broken bones, cuts, concussions, and more serious trauma.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">E-bikes and motorized scooters can be especially risky because they travel faster than traditional bikes and are often used near cars, pedestrians, and busy intersections.\u00a0Golf carts also require caution, especially if\u00a0you\u2019re\u00a0visiting shore towns where they are increasingly popular and often available to rent.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cSome of the most serious injuries we see in the summer come from activities people think of as casual or low risk,\u201d says Dr. Nussey. \u201cBike helmets, slower speeds, and close supervision of children can make a\u00a0big\u00a0difference.\u201d<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Plan Ahead:<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0Children and adults should wear properly fitted helmets every time they ride a bike, e-bike, scooter, or skateboard\u00a0\u2013\u00a0even for short trips.\u00a0Riders should follow traffic laws, use bike lanes where available, stay visible, and avoid riding distracted.\u00a0When using golf carts,\u00a0make sure drivers know how to\u00a0operate\u00a0them safely, avoid overloading the cart,\u00a0and\u00a0drive slowly.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">When to Seek Care:<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0Go to the emergency department after a head injury\u00a0that results in\u00a0loss of consciousness, vomiting, confusion, worsening headache, seizure, or unusual behavior. Seek care for suspected broken bones, deep cuts, or severe pain after a fall or crash.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>4.) Practice Water Safety<\/h3>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Pools, beaches, lakes, and bays are summer favorites, but water safety should always come first. Drowning can happen quickly and quietly,\u00a0without the splashing and yelling you see in the movies,\u00a0especially in young children.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Alcohol, fatigue, strong currents, and overestimating swimming ability can increase risk for adults, too.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Plan Ahead:<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0Children should be closely supervised around water, even if they know how to swim. At the beach, swim near lifeguards, follow posted warnings, and stay out of the water during rough\u00a0surf\u00a0or storms. Never dive into shallow or unfamiliar water, and use extra caution around boats, docks, and personal watercraft.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">When to Seek Care:<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0Call 911 after any near-drowning event, trouble breathing after being in the water, loss of consciousness, chest pain, confusion, or significant injury from diving, boating, or water sports.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>5.) Keep Food Safe at Cookouts and Picnics<\/h3>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Food poisoning is more common in the summer because bacteria grow quickly in warm, humid weather. Be especially careful with perishable foods like potato salad, egg salad, macaroni salad, chicken salad, burgers, hot dogs, and grilled chicken.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cFood poisoning can quickly lead to dehydration, especially in children, older adults, and people with underlying health conditions,\u201d says Dr. Nussey.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Plan Ahead:<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0Keep cold foods in a cooler with ice, don\u2019t leave food out for more than two hours\u00a0(or one hour if it\u2019s above 90\u00b0F),\u00a0use a food thermometer when grilling, and keep raw meat separate from ready-to-eat foods.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">When to Seek Care:<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0Get medical attention if vomiting or diarrhea is severe, persistent, or accompanied by fever, bloody stool, dizziness, confusion, or signs of dehydration.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>Know Where to Go for Care<\/h3>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Not every summer injury requires\u00a0a visit to\u00a0the emergency department, but some symptoms should never be ignored.
