But along with trips to the pool, park, and other outdoor attractions comes the risk of heat-related illness. So, what can you do to make sure your children are safe and healthy this summer, even as temperatures rise?

According to Maureen Donnelly, RN, MSN, Injury Prevention Coordinator at Cooper University Health Care and Safe Kids Southern NJ Coalition Coordinator, the keys factors to beating the heat are knowledge and prevention.

“The best way to protect your children from dehydration, heat exhaustion, and/or heat stroke is to know the signs and plan ahead,” Donnelly says. “These symptoms also apply to adults, so be careful, especially when temperatures rise above 90° F.”

Signs of Heat-Related Illness

Donnelly says that heat-related hazards can come on quickly, so it’s important to recognize the symptoms and know how to treat them.

Symptoms of Dehydration, Heat Exhaustion, and Heat Stroke

Dehydration

Thirst

Headache

Feeling dizzy/lightheaded

Dry skin and mouth

Dark yellow urine

Increased heart rate and breathing

Heat Exhaustion

Heavy sweating

Headache/nausea/vomiting

Cold or clammy skin

Muscle cramps and weakness

Dizziness/confusion

Fast, weak pulse

Heat Stroke

High body temperature (> 103° F)

Headache/nausea/vomiting

Hot, red, dry, skin

Dizziness/confusion

Loss of consciousness

Fast, strong pulse

Treatment of Heat-Related Illness

If your child is dehydrated, stop their activity immediately and move them to a cool place. Give your child fluids. Drinks such as sports drinks are good choices because they have salt and minerals, which help restore the body’s electrolytes.

Heat exhaustion is more serious. Follow the same instructions for dehydration. You can also help lower the child’s body temperature with cool cloths or ice packs. If symptoms get worse or last longer than one hour, seek medical attention.

“Heat stroke occurs when the body can no longer regulate its temperature,” Donnelly says. “This is the most serious heat-related illness, and you should call 911 immediately.” While waiting for assistance, try to cool your child quickly by moving to a cooler area and applying ice packs to their neck and armpits.

Tips to Beat the Heat

If you plan to be outside, there are several steps you can take to protect your children from heat-related illness:

Stay hydrated: Pack a water bottle and encourage your children to drink frequently, even if they don’t ask for it. On hot days, infants taking bottles can be given additional breast milk or formula, but they should not be given water, especially in the first six months of life.

Choose water-rich foods: Some of the best fruits to snack on in the heat include watermelon, pineapple, grapes, blueberries, and oranges. Water-rich vegetables, such as cucumber, celery, and zucchini, can also help to provide hydration.

Dress lightly: Dress your children in clothing that is light-colored, lightweight, and limited to one layer of absorbent material that will maximize the evaporation of sweat. Kids have a lower capacity for sweating than adults.

Plan for extra rest time: Heat can often make children (and their parents!) feel tired and irritable. Spend time indoors regularly to cool off, rest, and drink water.

Keep cool: When your children feel hot, jump in the pool or water (if available), mist them with water, or apply cool cloths to their skin.

Never leave children in a car: The inside of a car can become dangerously hot in just a short amount of time, even with the windows open.

What can you do during the dog days of summer when it’s just too hot to go out?

Plan a movie marathon: Pick your children’s favorite flicks, grab some snacks, and enjoy a movie matinee when the heat is most intense.

Visit an aquarium or a local museum: Take a day trip to your nearest indoor attraction and spend the day enjoying a fun, educational experience.

Head to the mall: Enjoy a snack and check out what’s new at your favorite stores. It will be time to shop for “back to school” before you know it.

Stop by the library: Spending an afternoon at the library is a great way to keep kids cool, busy, engaged, and enlightened. Many libraries offer free story hour and other activities for kids.

Get out the craft supplies: You know all those arts and crafts gifts that your children got for the holidays? It’s time to break them out and let your kids’ imaginations run wild!

Summer is meant for fun and relaxation for the whole family. But as the heat sizzles, be mindful of the risk factors that can come with it. With a bit of planning and prevention, and a watchful eye, you can be sure that you and your children will have a safe – and cool – summer!

For more safety tips for kids, visit https://www.safekids.org/safetytips.

If your child needs quick medical attention for a non-life-threatening condition, visit one of Cooper’s Urgent Care Centers in Cherry Hill, Audubon, or Cinnaminson.
