Our conversation led to some insights that may be helpful to you or someone you love.

Whether you’re in school or a recent grad, living at home or out on your own, employed or still looking – you’re likely trying to figure out this whole “adulting” thing. It’s new, exciting, and definitely a little scary. One of the most intimidating obstacles you will encounter is how to navigate the complex U.S. health care system. But have no fear – your health care guide is here.

As a recent college graduate, I am now living in the “real world,” and with that comes many new responsibilities. I will eventually be bumped off my parent’s health insurance plan (and out of my mom’s basement), which means it is time to take control and invest in my health and future.

The following are questions I had regarding health care and insurance coverage that may be similar to yours. I even included a section for parents who may want to be sure their child is on the right path.

I’m young and healthy. Why should I care about health care or health insurance?

If you’re in your early 20s, you may feel invincible. However, illness, an injury, or something unexpected (like a global pandemic) can suddenly affect your life, and it’s important to take care of your health. Having a health insurance plan will protect you from unforeseen costs if you do become sick or hospitalized.

How do I choose a primary care doctor?

Now that you’ve graduated from the pediatrician’s office, you’ll need a primary care provider to guide you through important health care decisions.

When choosing a primary care provider, do your research. Look for offices that accept your insurance, are conveniently located, and a provider who speaks your language fluently. If you don’t feel comfortable with your provider after a few visits, consider looking for another one. Primary care providers are usually Internal Medicine specialists or Family Medicine specialists.

Read online reviews or call the office directly and ask about:

Office policies (including cancellation policies)

Average wait times

Use of technology/access to a patient portal

Availability of tests and procedures on-site

Options for telehealth

When making an appointment, be sure to explain the reason for your visit and ask what documents (like your past medical records) or identification you may need to bring with you.

Why is it important to have a relationship with my doctor?

Research shows that many younger people are choosing urgent care centers over a visit with a primary care provider to treat an illness. While urgent care centers are great and offer convenience, establishing a relationship and good communication with your doctor will offer more personalized care as your health care needs change over time.

Do I really need to see the doctor every year?

Yes, annual checkups are vital to your health. Depending on your health care needs and concerns, your doctor may want to see you more (or less) often. Variables such as family medical history, lifestyle habits, and diet and exercise can change over time, and your doctor should be kept up-to-date on these changes. If you are sexually active, it is essential to make sure you are screened regularly for sexually transmitted infections.

Regular visits also strengthen the doctor-patient relationship and assist you in prioritizing your health. Infrequent visits make it harder for both of you to track changes in your health or determine if a previous health issue is playing a role in a current condition.

What other types of doctors/health professionals should I see?

When you require additional care, your primary care provider will help you choose and refer you to specialists. Specialties could include dermatologists, gastroenterologists, OB/GYNs, and mental health providers.

What are my health insurance coverage options?

Health care in the U.S. is complicated. To make things a little easier for you, here are several health insurance options:

Staying on your parents’ plan until you age out

Joining an employer-sponsored insurance plan

Purchasing a plan on the Health Insurance Marketplace created by the Affordable Care Act (ACA)

Purchasing your own private insurance plan from a health insurance company

Getting a college health insurance plan

Medicaid plans, which are government funded, are available for low income individuals and families

If you’re younger than 26 years old, the Affordable Care Act (ACA) allows you to stay on your parents’ health insurance plan, even if you’re no longer an official dependent on their taxes.

If you are employed, employer-sponsored health coverage is a common alternative. In some rare cases, you may not have to contribute to the cost of the insurance – it depends on your employer and the benefits they offer. Health insurance coverage from your employer typically costs less than other options and allows you to add dependents to your plan. When looking at job opportunities, it is important to learn about the health benefits offered by the employer before you accept a job offer.

Medicaid is a government-funded health insurance program that provides free or low-cost health care to low-income Americans. Medicaid is a federal and state-funded coverage option available only to those who are eligible, so check your state requirements to see if you qualify.

If your employer does not offer health benefits or if you do not qualify for a government-funded insurance option, you may have to purchase health insurance on the Health Insurance Marketplace (ACA plan) or through a private insurance company. Purchasing a plan directly from an insurance company is generally more expensive, but you can work with a licensed agent to help you find the best plan.

If you are still in school and need health insurance, you may be able to find coverage through your college. Young adults should strongly consider getting insurance from their school if it’s available, especially if they are attending a school far from home.

How do I pay for insurance?

Below is a list of terms you should familiarize yourself with when paying for your health insurance. Don’t worry; there won’t be a test at the end.

Premium: The amount you pay out of pocket for your health insurance plan each month

Deductible: The amount you pay for covered health care services before your insurance plan starts to pay for your medical services.

Co-payment (co-pay): A fixed amount you’ll pay for certain health care services after you’ve paid your deductible and your insurance coverage begins.

Coinsurance: The percentage of the cost of your medical services that you must pay out of pocket. (Example, if you have an insurance plan with 20% coinsurance and your doctor’s bill is $100, your insurance plan will pay $80 and you will pay the remaining $20, or 20%.

Out-of-pocket expense: The total amount of money you have to pay for medical care, including deductibles, co-pays, and services your insurance does not cover

Out-of-network: A doctor, hospital, or practice that does not have an agreement with your insurance company or plan; any service you receive from an out-of-network provider may not be covered by your insurance or you may have to pay a higher amount of the cost of the medical service from that provider.

When choosing a plan, it’s a good idea to take into account your total out-of-pocket costs, not just the amount you pay the insurance company each month in premiums. Try to understand exactly what you will pay under your health insurance plan. High deductibles and large coinsurance amounts require more money out of your pocket. Be sure you understand your obligations when picking a plan. If you don’t understand something, ask a question.

If you are transitioning from your parents’ insurance plan to a plan provided through your job, be sure to contact your employer to understand when you employer’s coverage begins. You may have to wait until the first of the next month after you start.

Should I get dental and vision coverage?

It is highly recommended to sign up for dental insurance. There are many links between oral health and general health, and annual exams and teeth cleanings will benefit your overall health. The need for vision insurance can depend more on the individual. If you wear glasses or contacts, vision insurance would be an ideal option.

If you are young and healthy, it is okay to consider the least expensive plan, depending on your financial situation. It will likely have a high deductible, but it can provide coverage if something unexpected happens. To play it safe, it is better to be over-insured rather than underinsured.

Attention, Parents!

Parents, you can start to help your young adult co-manage their health care now. Encourage them to take an active role by asking questions, scheduling appointments, familiarizing themselves with their medications, refilling prescriptions, and keeping copies of their medical records.

While the transition to adult health care won’t happen overnight, planning and talking about what to expect will prepare young adults for what lies ahead.

Cooper patients who have questions about their health insurance, or cost of services, can click here to learn more or connect with a Cooper financial customer service representative.

If you are looking for a doctor or an advanced practice provider, Cooper University Health Care has more than 30 conveniently located internal medicine and family medicine offices throughout South Jersey.

Disponibilidad de pruebas y procedimientos in situ
