It can be the result of an injury or caused by arthritis. Regardless of the reason for your knee pain, several non-surgical options are available to help relieve your pain and improve your quality of life.

“The largest number of patients I see complain about their knees,” says David Gealt, DO, Assistant Director of Sports Medicine and an orthopaedic physician at Cooper University Health Care. “My goal is to relieve that pain and solve that problem before I see the patients on the operating table.”

Dr. Gealt offers the following tips to manage pain and strengthen the knee and surrounding muscles.

Over-the-counter medications: Tylenol and over-the-counter anti-inflammatory medications, such as Advil and Aleve, are a good first line of treatment for non-chronic pain.

Topical analgesics/hot and cold therapy: Over-the-counter items such as Bengay, capsaicin, and Mineral Ice also can offer relief. If the knee is swollen, cold therapy should be used for 10 to 15 minutes at a time, three times per day. If there is no swelling, then hot therapy can help. You can use a heating pad or patches, but don’t use them for more than 10 to 20 minutes at a time. Remember to place a light towel between your skin and a heating pad or ice to decrease the potential for injury to your skin.

NSAIDs and COX-2 inhibitors: When over-the-counter treatments are ineffective, stronger non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) and COX-2 medications, such as prescription-strength naproxen and celecoxib (Celebrex), might help. These drugs work to reduce inflammation instead of targeting just the pain.

Weight loss, if applicable: Weight loss may help decrease the stress on your knees, and improve your overall health and mobility.

Exercise or physical therapy: Physical therapy and low-impact exercise can help to keep joints mobile, surrounding muscles strong and supportive, and blood flow consistent. Physical therapy also can retrain your muscles to better support your knee and specific problem areas.

Activity modification: Avoid activities that may aggravate or reinjure your knee.

Support devices: Canes, walkers, or crutches can be used to reduce weight on your “bad” knee. Remember to have a qualified professional measure and train you on the proper use of this equipment.

Viscosupplementation (hyaluronic acid): Numerous brands (e.g., Euflexxa, Orthovisc, Supartz) of these injections are available, and patients may have different responses to each brand. The theory behind these injections is that the fluid injected acts as a lubricant that helps to reduce pain and increase mobility. Patients with mild to moderate arthritis tend to respond well to this treatment.

Cortisone injection: A cortisone injection may be beneficial when there is an acute flare-up, as it provides medication directly to the knee joint. These injections can provide relief for weeks or months depending on the severity of symptoms and arthritis. As arthritis progresses, cortisone injections may provide only short-term relief.

Regenerative medicine techniques: These treatments repair or “regenerate” human cells, tissues, or organs to restore function after an injury or after age-related wear and tear. “Our goal is to use novel therapeutics to stimulate the body’s innate healing properties and eliminate pain,” Dr. Gealt says. “All treatments we use are FDA approved and safe for our patients.” Click here to learn more about these techniques.

If these treatments don’t provide significant relief, surgery may be the next best step to providing long-lasting relief and return to full mobility.. Cooper orthopaedic surgeons offer options to address your specific concern.

“Depending on your personal situation, we can offer knee arthroscopy if your pain is from a meniscus tear. We also perform partial, total, or custom knee replacements,” Dr. Gealt adds. “Each has its own advantages, and Cooper’s team will help you make the right decision for your diagnosis, your goals, and your quality of life.”

For an appointment with a knee specialist at Cooper’s Bone and Joint Institute, call 800.8.COOPER (800.826.6737) or use our online form.

10 consejos no quirúrgicos para el dolor de rodilla

El dolor de rodilla es un síntoma común que afecta a personas de todas las edades.
