However, with a five-year survival rate of nearly 98%, it is one of the most treatable cancers. To help ensure a healthy prostate, it’s important to be proactive by knowing your risk factors and recognizing the signs and symptoms of prostate cancer.

The normal prostate is a walnut-shaped gland responsible for the production of semen that sits just below the bladder. The urethra, a tube that delivers urine from the bladder, runs through the prostate gland.

“Non-cancerous disease of the prostate, like benign enlargement or infection, may mimic symptoms of cancer,” explains Robert Somer, MD, Head, Division of Hematology/Medical Oncology and Director, Cancer Clinical Trials Program at MD Anderson Cancer Center at Cooper. “However, as with many cancers, prostate cancer may have few or no symptoms, so it’s important to know the risk factors of the disease.”

Age: This is the most important risk factor. More than 90% of cases occur in men who are 55 or older.

Family history: Risk is higher when members of your family (especially your father, brother, or son) have or previously had prostate cancer. The risk increases if your family member was diagnosed at a younger age.

Race: African American men or Caribbean men of African ancestry have nearly double the risk of prostate cancer as men of European ancestry.

Other risk factors include:

A diet high in animal fats (such as red meat)

Higher than normal levels of testosterone

Certain occupational exposures, including welding and working with rubber, cadmium, and battery components

“If you have any of these risk factors, I strongly recommend you get proactive about your prostate health and consider screening for cancer,” Dr. Somer says. “Start the conversation with your primary care doctor and, if necessary, see a Cooper specialist to get ahead of any issues.”

It’s also important to know the symptoms of prostate cancer. Speak to your doctor if you experience any of the following:

Frequent urge to urinate, especially during the night

Blood in your urine or semen

Problems with initiating and maintaining a urinary stream

Painful urination or ejaculation

Frequent pain or stiffness in your lower back, hips, or upper thigh

Unexplained weight loss or fatigue

Nausea or vomiting

Prostate cancer often grows very slowly, and some men, especially those who are older or have other serious health problems, may never need treatment. Instead, doctors may recommend active surveillance, where the disease is monitored.

“Our team works closely with patients to monitor prostate cancer, often without active treatment such as surgery or radiation,” Dr. Somer adds. “But if treatment is necessary, MD Anderson at Cooper is one of America’s 100 Best Hospitals for Prostate Surgery, and we offer many types of treatment, including clinical trials.
