Before this, the rules for reporting dense breast tissue varied from state to state, and some didn’t require any notification at all. A 2014 New Jersey law requires all women to be notified of their breast density on their mammogram report. This law also provides for additional screening coverage for women with extremely dense breasts.

“About 50% of women ages 40 and older have dense breast tissue,” says Dr. Brody. “Knowing your breast density allows for more proactive and personalized care, which can make a difference in early detection.”

What Is Breast Density?

Breasts are made up of three types of tissue: fibrous tissue that holds them in place, glandular tissue that produces and moves milk, and fatty tissue that fills the space and gives breasts their shape. Breast density refers to how much fibrous and glandular tissue there is compared with fat. If you have dense breasts, it means there’s more fibrous and glandular tissue than fat.

On a mammogram, dense breast tissue appears as solid white areas, which can make it harder to detect abnormalities and may increase the likelihood of missed tumors.

What Causes Dense Breasts?

The exact reasons for differences in breast density aren’t fully understood. However, certain factors make some women more likely to have dense breasts. Hormone levels, body composition, and genetics all play a role in breast density.

Younger age. As women age, breast tissue tends to become less dense, although some women may have dense breasts at any age.

Lower body mass index (BMI).Women with less body fat are more likely to have dense breast tissue compared with women who have more body fat.

Hormone therapy. Women who take combination hormone therapy to relieve the signs and symptoms of menopause are more likely to have dense breasts.

Throughout a woman’s life, her breast density may change if any of these factors shift.

Why Does Breast Density Matter?

“Looking at dense breasts with mammography is like looking through a cloud.” Dr. Brody says. “Both normal dense breast tissue and many cancers appear solid white on mammogram. The more dense breast tissue you have, the harder it is to perceive an abnormal finding. A small tumor may be missed. Also, women with dense breasts have a higher overall risk of developing breast cancer than women with less dense breasts.”

All of Cooper’s Breast Imaging Centers use 3D mammography as the standard technology for breast cancer screening. A 3D mammogram (breast tomosynthesis) takes multiple X-rays to create a 3D image of the breast. This allows doctors to better distinguish dense breast tissue from tumors.

If your doctor requests additional screening for breast cancer, our centers also offer advanced technologies, such as breast ultrasound and MRI.

Cooper’s Breast Imaging Centers have been designated Breast Imaging Centers of Excellence by the American College of Radiology. Cooper is the only hospital-based imaging program in South Jersey designated as a Center of Excellence..

Additionally, MD Anderson Cancer Center at Cooper has a special program for women who have dense breasts. The breast health experts at MD Anderson at Cooper’s Dense Breast Clinic provide women with a comprehensive physical examination, including a review of existing breast imaging studies and other risk factors. The team then develops personalized screening recommendations for each woman.

Schedule Your Mammogram Today

Early detection is important for all women ages 40 and older to get an annual mammogram. If you have been told that you have dense breasts, regular mammograms are even more important.

“Understanding breast density can be challenging, but knowledge is power,” Dr. Brody says. “And the experts at MD Anderson at Cooper are here to guide you.”

With several locations throughout the region, we make it easy to schedule your mammogram.
