APPs see patients of all ages and provide a range of essential health care services. They can diagnose, manage, and treat patients with chronic and acute health care conditions.

“APPs are essential in the day-to-day care of our patients at Cooper,” says Daniel Hyman, DO, Medical Director, Population Health and Primary Care at Cooper University Health Care. “They are highly trained and skilled at delivering primary and specialty care while emphasizing health education and disease prevention. Our physicians have great confidence in our APP colleagues and rely on their partnership in caring for needs of our patients.”

How Are APPs Different From Doctors?

APPs are health care professionals who have completed additional intensive training beyond their initial professional licensure. They are different from doctors in two important ways:

They have a different educational path than physician (MD or DO).

They can provide much of the same care as physicians, but they may not be able to perform certain procedures or surgeries.

APPs are most commonly nurse practitioners (NPs) or physician assistants (PAs). Another type of APP is the certified registered nurse anesthetist (CRNA), who works in the OR or procedure-related areas where patients require anesthesia. The most significant differences between NPs and PAs are their training, where they work, and the scope of their practice. An APP must have a master’s degree or higher to practice and the type of degree will depend on their specific role.

“Working as an APP at Cooper allows me to partner with members of our health care team to develop individualized care plans that address health and wellness needs of my patients,” says Mary-Elizabeth Gaskill, MSN, APN, Lead Advanced Practice Provider for Adult Primary Care at Cooper. “I get to be a healer and a teacher and I love taking the time to get to know my patients so I can provide the best possible care.”

This week marks National Nurse Practitioner week. Nurse practitioners, also known as advanced practice nurses, and physician assistants play a critical role as trusted providers of health care. As the demand for health services has grown, their role has expanded.

NPs complete training in advanced nursing practice, where they focus on specialized roles, much like physicians specialize in neurology, cardiology, and other specific body systems or diseases. They earn a graduate-level nursing degree — either a Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) or a Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP).

Nurse practitioners can:

Diagnose and treat acute and chronic conditions, such as diabetes, heart failure, and pneumonia

Order medications, therapies, and other treatments

Perform and interpret diagnostic tests (e.g., X-rays, lab work)

Provide patient education

Advise patients on their health care plan

Perform specialty-specific responsibilities

Physician Assistants (PAs) complete education in general medicine and earn a Master of Science (MS) or Master of Physician Assistant Studies (MPAS). Their training includes all fundamental elements of medicine and specialty fields, which they learn through classroom instruction and clinical experience. Most PAs have an undergraduate education in biological, premedical, or scientific study. They partner with physicians and other health care providers to deliver primary and specialty care. In a typical day, a PA may:

Take medical histories

Order and interpret lab tests and diagnostic tests

Perform physical exams

Diagnose and treat illness

Assist in surgery

Educate patients about their treatment plan

Where Do APPs Work?

Like physicians, APPs work in a variety of patient settings. You may find them in the following roles:

Seeing patients in outpatient offices

Providing inpatient care

Conducting research and clinical trials

Providing survivorship care

Helping patients to manage high-risk conditions

Performing health screenings in a clinic

Working in education and administration

With the current national shortage of doctors and the heightened demand for health services, APPs have the advanced training and expertise needed to step in and provide continuity of care for patients. Their presence increases the availability of appointments and drives down health care costs.

The nature of their practice often allows APPs to spend more time with patients, increasing satisfaction with care. Although there will always be services that only doctors can provide, APPs provide a reliable alternative for many health care needs.

“APPs are an essential,” Dr. Hyman states. “Without their skills and abilities to handle acute and chronic situations, access to care for our patients would be greatly limited. Our patients and health system benefit from their expertise.”

To make an appointment with an APP at a Cooper office near you, call 800.8.COOPER (800.826.6737) or use our online form to make an appointment.

Cómo las aplicaciones mejoran la experiencia del paciente

Se necesita un equipo para brindar atención médica de alta calidad.
