You can request to schedule a test through myCooper or by calling your doctor’s office. Our COVID-19 Testing page has additional options. Due to a rising number of patients who need to see providers, we ask that you do not go to Cooper’s ED or urgent care centers just for testing.

What You Can Do to Treat Illness at Home

Many seasonal respiratory illnesses can be treated safely at home and do not require a trip to the emergency department or urgent care. Staying home reduces your risk of exposure to other illnesses in the ED and allows our team to provide more timely care for patients with serious medical emergencies.

“For general cold and flu symptoms, supportive at-home care is a great place to start,” says Dr. Smith. Here are some tips to help you feel more comfortable without having to change out of your slippers and PJs and venture outside:

Drink plenty of liquids. Stay hydrated to help reduce cold and flu-like symptoms; dehydration can result in fever.

Clear up stuffed nasal passages. Use a cool-mist humidifier or saline (salt water) nose spray to help relieve sinus congestion.

Loosen the cough. Consult your physician or local pharmacist for age-appropriate, over-the-counter medications in the correct dosages to break up mucus. Hot liquids such as tea or water with lemon and honey may also help. Remember, do not give honey to an infant under the age of one.

Plenty of rest can aid recovery. Keep in mind that due to fever, your child may feel very hot. Dress them comfortably and avoid heavy blankets. A lukewarm bath can also help them cool off before taking a nap or going to sleep for the night.

Reduce fever. Over-the-counter acetaminophen or ibuprofen can help lower a fever and relieve achiness; both are safe for adults and children. Always read the label or consult your health care provider or pharmacist for correct products and dosages. Avoid giving aspirin to a child. Aspirin has been linked with Reye’s syndrome, a rare but serious condition that causes swelling in the liver and brain. It most often affects children and teenagers recovering from a viral infection, most commonly the flu or chickenpox. So, choose something other than aspirin to treat your child.

You can always use myCooper to send non-urgent questions or messages to your doctor’s office. We will do our best to respond as quickly as possible.

When to Call Your Doctor

Call your doctor or your child’s pediatrician if these symptoms occur:

Temperature does not go down after taking acetaminophen or ibuprofen

Fever is greater than 101°F for more than two days

Fever is 104°F or higher at any time

Fever is 100.4°F or higher in a child younger than three months old

Fever lasts more than three days

Wheezing

Croup (a loud barking cough)

Pain or pressure in the chest

Abdominal pain

Confusion; dizziness or light-headedness

Excessive vomiting

Trouble taking liquids or appearing dehydrated with decreased urination

When to Seek Emergency Care

Children should be taken to the Emergency Department if they experience any of the following symptoms:

Difficulty breathing, shortness of breath, or rapid breathing

Stops breathing or becomes unresponsive

High fever with rash

Bluish-colored lips or nails

Dry lips or sunken eyes

Coughing up blood

If you do visit your doctor’s office, urgent care center, or ED, please be mindful that patients and visitors are required to wear masks in all of our facilities and locations.
