With so many competing products on the market, it is difficult to discern the helpful from the marketing hype. Ashley B. Decker, MD, a board-certified dermatologic surgeon at Cooper University Health Care, weighs in on various products and their role in promoting healthy skin.

“A good skin care routine does not have to be complicated to be effective. Less is often more in terms of skin care, and there are plenty of great choices that fit every budget,” says Dr. Decker. “Here are my top three tips for a good, basic skin care routine.”

#1. Wear sunscreen every day.

You’ve heard it before, but it is worth repeating. One of the most important things you can do for your skin is to wear sunscreen every day, year round. The sun can damage skin in any season, even on overcast days. A sunscreen with an SPF rating of 30 or above should be used daily and reapplied every hour and a half when outside for long periods.

There are two categories of sunscreen: chemical blockers and physical blockers. Physical sunscreens act like a shield, while chemical sunscreens are absorbed into the skin.

Chemical sunscreen is absorbed by the skin to convert UV rays into energy before they can harm the skin. The active ingredients in chemical sunscreens include avobenzone, octinoxate, and oxybenzone.

Physical sunscreen sits on top of the skin and reflects the sun’s rays. Active ingredients include zinc oxide and titanium dioxide.

Both chemical and physical sunscreens work well to protect from UVA and UVB (broad spectrum) rays, but must be applied often to be most effective. Sunscreen should always be the last thing applied to the skin in the morning.

#2. Wash your face with a gentle cleanser.

For most people with “normal” skin (not too dry or too oily and free from damage), a basic skin care routine is sufficient for everyday care, Dr. Decker says.

A daily skin care routine should include washing your face each morning and evening with a gentle cleanser. Choose a face wash that gently removes sweat, dirt, and makeup, but avoid cleansers that dry out or damage your skin. Look for brands that are free from sulfates and parabens.

#3. Protect and pamper your skin.

In the morning, after cleansing, follow up with an application of vitamin C serum, moisturizer, and sunscreen.

Moisturizer in an oil-free, fragrance-free formula is highly recommended, especially for people with sensitive skin. Most people can tell if they have dry, normal, or oily skin, and seek out products that address these specific needs or skin concerns. Look for products labeled “noncomedogenic,” which means that the ingredients will not clog pores.

Vitamin C serum has antioxidant and anti-aging properties, which protect skin from free radicals. Free radicals are generated by UV exposure and can cause wrinkles, age spots, and even skin cancers. Vitamin C serums can reduce of the appearance of fine lines, wrinkles, and hyperpigmentation for a brighter, more even skin tone. Vitamin C serums are available at various concentrations, so choose one with at least 10% concentration. Vitamin C should be applied in the morning before sunscreen to shield skin from the effects of free radicals.

In the evening, after washing your face, apply a pea-sized amount of a retinoid (either an over-the-counter or prescription strength product) and allow it to absorb into the skin. Complete your evening routine with moisturizer.

Retinoids are derived from vitamin A and come in three forms: retinol, retinal, and trans-retinoic acid. Retinoids help to increase skin turnover, giving skin a healthy glow and promoting collagen production, which helps to improve the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. They also inhibit production of melanin (pigment) to improve discoloration. Retinol and retinal forms are available as over-the-counter products and are more gentle on the skin, but they are not as effective as retinoic acid (also known as tretinoin), which is available by prescription only. Retinoic acid comes in varying strengths, but can be drying or irritating, so it should only be used under the care of a dermatologist.

“There are so many skin care products on the market that it can be challenging for patients to decipher what works and what does not,” Dr. Decker says.

For those with chronic acne, eczema, or other skin conditions, always consult with a dermatologist before using skin care products.

“Skin is the body’s largest organ, and you don’t need a 10-step routine or thousands of dollars to create a beneficial routine to care for your skin,” Dr. Decker says. “Also remember that consistency is key in producing and maintaining healthy results.”

Cooper offers patients state-of-the-art dermatologic care, specializing in medical, surgical, and cosmetic dermatology.

Cooper’s dermatologists and surgeons can treat the following skin conditions:

Acne

Dermatitis

Eczema

Hair loss

Moles

Psoriasis

Rashes

Rosacea

Skin cancers

Warts and other benign growths

Our cosmetic surgeons have training and expertise in treating a range of cosmetic concerns, including:

Acne scarring

Broken blood vessels

Brown spots (age spots/lentigos)

Cellulite

Chin issues, such as severe convexity (receding chin) or fullness (double chin)

Facial lines and wrinkles

Hair loss or thinning

Red spots and rosacea

Scarring

Sebaceous adenoma (small bump on the face, scalp, belly, back, or chest)

Skin irregularities

Under-eye bags

To make an appointment with a dermatologist or cosmetic surgeon at Cooper, call 800.8.COOPER (800.826.6737) or use our online form.

The skin care industry is big business.
