A new trending practice many are choosing to take part in is \u201cDry January.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dry January involves abstaining from alcohol for the entire month, but tempering alcohol intake doesn\u2019t have to be an all or nothing approach. \u201cDamp January,\u201d which is reducing your alcohol intake, is becoming a popular alternative. Either way, taking part in this initiative gives you a chance to reflect on how much you may be drinking and your relationship with alcohol. The goal is to thoughtfully consider your alcohol intake and its effect on your health and overall well-being as you start the new year.<\/p>\n<p>The potential health benefits of taking part in Dry or Damp January may be great, even if your normal alcohol consumption is minimal.\u00a0 \u00a0Eliminating or reducing alcohol for just one month may help improve your energy levels, help you lose weight, improve your sleep, lower your blood pressure and cholesterol levels, and reduce your risk of many types of cancer. Evidence also suggests that cutting alcohol consumption, even on a short-term basis, can improve liver function.<\/p>\n<p>Here are some more benefits of an alcohol-free month:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>You\u2019ll save money<\/strong>. Fancy cocktails can cost up to $15 each. Two or three of those a week can really add up!<\/li>\n<li><strong>Your skin may look brighter<\/strong>. Alcohol dehydrates the body, which leads to dull, dry skin. New research also shows that the toxins in alcohol can speed up the skin\u2019s aging process.<\/li>\n<li><strong>No hangovers!<\/strong> The benefits of waking up refreshed will do wonders for your mood and outlook on the day ahead. You\u2019ll have more time and energy for fun, productive activities.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>\u201cThe possible benefits of participating in some version of Dry January are significant, for both your mental and physical health. Reducing your alcohol intake can improve your mood and energy levels whether you drink only occasionally or more frequently,\u201d says <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cooperhealth.org\/doctors\/kaitlan-baston-md\">Kaitlan Baston, MD, MSc, DFASAM<\/a>, Medical Director of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cooperhealth.org\/services\/addiction-medicine\">Cooper\u2019s Addiction Medicine Program<\/a>. \u201cHowever, if you find you are taking part in heavy drinking \u2013 generally more than three or four drinks a day, several days a week \u2013 be sure to talk to your doctor before jumping into Dry January. Those who drink more heavily may experience some symptoms of alcohol withdrawal that may require more support. If so, try to avoid those locations, if possible, for the month.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>At the end of Dry January, pay attention to how you are feeling and how abstaining from alcohol for a month has affected other aspects of your life, such as your relationships, work, and overall productivity. Cutting back on alcohol doesn\u2019t have to be a goal just for January.
