Fortunately, with a few simple lifestyle changes, you can increase your immunity to fend off illness during the winter \u2013 and all year long.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.cooperhealth.org\/ehealth\/2024\/01\/23\/5-tips-to-increase-immunity-and-fight-infection\/#espanol\">Para leer en Espa\u00f1ol, por favor haga clic aqu\u00ed<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Caitlyn Mitchell, MS, RDN, is an outpatient oncology dietitian at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cooperhealth.org\/services\/md-anderson-cancer-center-cooper\">MD Anderson Cancer Center at Cooper<\/a>. We asked her to share some dietary and lifestyle tips, not just for those with cancer, but for everyone who wants to boost their immune system naturally.<\/p>\n<h3>Increase your fruit and vegetable intake.<\/h3>\n<p>Research has shown that a diet high in fruit and vegetables can help protect immune system function and increase the numbers of cells that battle infection. Fruits and vegetables are also high in nutrients known to boost immunity, such as folate, vitamin A, vitamin C, vitamin D, and zinc.<\/p>\n<p>Remember, \u201csuperfood\u201d is a marketing concept. So instead of focusing on specific fruits and vegetables, try these simple ways to increase your intake overall:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Make half of your plate a mix of fruits and vegetables.<\/li>\n<li>Choose fresh or dried fruit as a snack.<\/li>\n<li>Enrich your soup or smoothie with extra vegetables.<\/li>\n<li>Choose fruits and vegetables in a variety of colors to ensure that your diet provides a diverse range of vitamins, minerals, and nutrients that help protect immunity.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Maintain a diverse, rich gut microbiome.<\/h3>\n<p>Our gastrointestinal (GI) tract contains 70% of our body\u2019s immune cells. These immune cells make their home in the gut microbiome, which is a broad term for the billions of bacteria in the GI tract. The relationship between the gut microbiome and immunity is not yet fully understood; however, research has found that a healthy gut microbiome promotes immune function and reduces immune-decreasing inflammation.<\/p>\n<p>To maintain a strong gut microbiome, focus on increasing intake of fiber through foods such as beans, lentils, and whole grains. Fermented foods such as yogurt, kefir, and sauerkraut can also enhance the gut microbiome content.<\/p>\n<h3>Increase physical activity.<\/h3>\n<p>Regular physical activity can help increase immune function and prevent illness. Exercise has been shown to increase the circulation of immune cells, which can help your body detect an infection earlier.<\/p>\n<p>The frequency, duration, and intensity of exercise matters. Daily moderate to vigorous physical activity for a maximum of 60 minutes shows the best results when it comes to immune function. Examples of moderate to vigorous physical activity include running, power walking, and weight resistance training. Because exercising at vigorous to intense levels for more than 60 minutes can actually suppress immunity, getting enough rest between sessions is important.<\/p>\n<h3>Get enough sleep.<\/h3>\n<p>Those who do not get enough rest at night are more likely to get sick after being exposed to an illness. Lack of sleep can decrease the numbers of disease-fighting cells and antibodies. Sleep has also been shown to increase the ability of the immune system to recognize and fight off infections. It is recommended that adults get at least seven hours of sleep a night; children and teens need at least nine hours.<\/p>\n<h3>Stop smoking.<\/h3>\n<p>Smoking can cause significant damage to the immune system. Many of the chemicals in cigarettes can interfere with immune function. Smoking can also reduce the levels of antioxidants in the bloodstream, which can lead to increased circulation of infections.
