Nontraumatic brain injuries (NTBIs) are often caused by internal factors, such as a stroke, aneurysm, lack of oxygen, or pressure from a tumor. Traumatic brain injuries (TBIs) are caused by an external force, such as a fall, car accident, assault, or sports injury.

TBIs are complex and are associated with a broad spectrum of symptoms and disabilities. They can range from mild to severe and can affect a patient’s physical, cognitive, and emotional function. Some TBIs can have lifelong effects.

“Most TBIs that occur each year are mild, and we know them as concussions,” says David B. Gealt, DO, Director of the Concussion Program and Assistant Director of Sports Medicine at Cooper University Health Care. “It’s important to seek medical attention for any TBI, particularly if symptoms persist or worsen. Also, if you’ve had a previous concussion, your brain may be more vulnerable to another injury.”

Here are some common signs and symptoms of a TBI:

Mild to severe headache that can be persistent

Confusion, including difficulty concentrating, memory problems, and disorientation

Amnesia

Nausea and vomiting

Dizziness and balance problems

Sensitivity to light and noise

Mood changes

Slurred speech

Sleep disturbances

Loss of consciousness

“It’s important to note that these symptoms can appear immediately after the injury or may take several hours or days to develop,” Dr. Gealt says. “Early detection and treatment can help minimize symptoms and improve recovery time.”

Diagnosis Is Critical

As a leading academic health system, Cooper approaches the diagnosis and treatment of TBI in a comprehensive manner with collaboration from experts in multiple disciplines. Specialists in the Cooper Neurological Institute and Cooper Bone and Joint Institute work as a team to create individualized treatment plans for each patient.

“How we treat TBI is unique to each patient, but it usually involves a multidisciplinary team approach that can include neurologists, neurosurgeons, sports medicine physicians, physical therapists, and neuropsychologists,” Dr. Gealt says.

For individuals with trauma to the head who exhibit obvious signs of injury or suspected issues, Cooper’s expert treatment team performs a full neurological, cognitive, and physical evaluation. If neuroimaging is necessary, Cooper has state-of-the-art facilities, including the latest technologies in EEG, CT, and MRI scanning.

Keep Yourself Safe

Not all TBIs can be prevented, but statistics show that falls and car accidents are the leading causes of TBI. Here are some tips to help protect yourself and your loved ones from TBI:

Always wear a seatbelt and make sure children are properly secured in age-appropriate car seats or boosters.

Wear a helmet when participating in high-risk activities, such as contact sports, biking, skateboarding, or skiing. Make sure the helmet fits properly.

Remove tripping hazards, such as clutter, cords, or loose rugs in your home to prevent falls.

Install handrails on stairs and nonslip mats in the bathtub or shower to prevent slips and falls.

Be cautious when walking or driving in areas with poor lighting or hazardous conditions, such as icy or wet pavement.

If you experience a traumatic brain injury or are having symptoms from a recent accident, fall, or trauma, make an appointment with an expert at Cooper’s Concussion and Traumatic Brain Injury Program by calling 856.536.1138 or using our online appointment form.

Mantente a salvo

March is Brain Injury Awareness Month.
