During this response, your body sends white blood cells to fight infection, which increases blood flow to the affected area to help support healing.

While the inflammatory process can be beneficial in helping your body heal effectively, inflammation can lead to a range of health problems if left unchecked.

There are two types of inflammation: acute and chronic.

Acute Inflammation

“Acute inflammation is usually easy to recognize,” says David Feinstein, DO, Head, Division of Rheumatology at Cooper University Health Care. “It’s the pain and swelling you feel when you twist your ankle or the redness and warmth around an infected cut. It can also leave you feeling tired, feverish, and just not ‘well.’ These are signs that your immune system is in overdrive, taking up energy and leaving little to fuel other activities. These symptoms usually last a few days to a few weeks.”

Treatment for acute inflammation depends on the cause. In some cases, ice plus over-the-counter medications, such as ibuprofen or acetaminophen, will reduce pain and swelling. Your health care provider may prescribe antibiotics for infections. If you’ve been injured, your doctor may also recommend rest and physical therapy to help heal the affected area.

Chronic Inflammation

Chronic inflammation can develop for no apparent reason and last for years, or even decades. Unlike acute inflammation, chronic inflammation causes harm to the body rather than repairing it. It is often caused by an underlying health condition, such as an autoimmune disorder or a chronic infection.

“Over time, chronic inflammation can damage tissues and organs and contribute to the development of various chronic diseases, including heart disease, diabetes, cancer, and autoimmune disorders,” Dr. Feinstein explains.

Chronic inflammation symptoms include fatigue and pain and are often associated with conditions such as:

Allergies

Arthritis and other joint diseases

Cancer

Cardiovascular disease

Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD)

Diabetes

Psoriasis

Rheumatoid arthritis

Gastrointestinal concerns

What causes chronic inflammation?

Chronic inflammation develops when the body cannot break down the pathogens it is exposed to on a daily basis or because of health factors.

Some known causes of inflammation include:

Environmental factors, such as exposure to pollution, chemicals, and other toxins

Chronic infection, such as hepatitis C and Lyme disease

Autoimmune disorders, such as rheumatoid arthritis, lupus, and celiac disease

Lifestyle factors that contribute to inflammation include:

Drinking too much alcohol

Excess weight

Too little or too much exercise

Smoking

Chronic stress

Unhealthy diet

The following foods are known to cause inflammation:

Refined carbohydrates, such as white bread and pastry

Fried foods

Soda and other sugar-sweetened beverages, and beverages containing aspartame

Red meat and processed meat

Margarine, shortening, and lard

Vegetable oils high in omega-6 (canola, corn, safflower, sunflower, and peanut oils)

Can inflammation be treated?

Depending on your overall health, the medications you are taking, and the severity of your symptoms, treatment can include healthy diet, medication, rest, and exercise. Your health care provider may suggest taking certain vitamins, supplements, or nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), such as ibuprofen, aspirin, or naproxen. If you experience joint inflammation, steroid injections can provide relief, although surgery is sometimes necessary.

Foods that fight inflammation

Some research indicates that following an anti-inflammatory diet can help prevent and reverse inflammation. Such a diet would contain foods rich in omega-3 fatty acids, magnesium, and antioxidants. Vitamins B6, C, D, and E also have anti-inflammatory properties.

Good sources of these vitamins and other anti-inflammatory elements include:

Fatty fish, including salmon, mackerel, tuna, and sardines

Fruits, especially strawberries, blueberries, cherries, and oranges

Green leafy vegetables, such as spinach, kale, and collards

Nuts, such as almonds and walnuts

Olive oil

Tomatoes

Lifestyle changes can also help reduce inflammation and improve overall health. Making healthy lifestyle choices, such as maintaining a balanced diet, exercising regularly, managing stress, taking steps to quit smoking, and limiting alcohol intake can help to reduce the risk of chronic inflammation and its associated health problems.

When should I call my health care provider?

Autoimmune disorders can be frustrating because symptoms can be vague and vary widely from person to person. Additionally, the symptoms of autoimmune disorders can be similar to those of other conditions, making it challenging to differentiate between them.

Another factor that makes autoimmune disorders difficult to diagnose is that many of them are rare, which means that doctors may not have seen many cases and may not be familiar with their symptoms. This can lead to misdiagnosis or a delay in diagnosis.

“At Cooper, our rheumatologists are board certified and have special training in the diagnosis and treatment of a wide range of autoimmune diseases and types of arthritis,” Dr. Feinstein says. “This expertise, paired with our depth of experience treating patients with rheumatologic conditions, leads to a high level of care.”

To diagnose an autoimmune disorder, doctors will typically perform a series of tests, including blood tests to measure levels of specific antibodies and other markers of inflammation, imaging tests to look for signs of inflammation or damage to specific organs, and biopsies to examine tissue samples for signs of inflammation.

Although autoimmune disorders can be challenging to diagnose because of their complex and varied symptoms, we work with patients to create personalized treatment plans to manage pain, reduce inflammation, and enhance quality of life,” Dr. Feinstein says.

Talk to your health care provider about ongoing pain, swelling, stiffness, fatigue, or other symptoms that don’t seem to go away. A break in the skin that becomes very red or begins to drain may indicate an infection that needs attention. A medical professional can assess your condition and find ways to help you feel better.

Click here to learn more about the Division of Rheumatology at Cooper and the many conditions we treat.
