Diabetes can affect the strength and flexibility of the body\u2019s tissues, including those in the abdominal wall. This can make it easier for a hernia to develop, particularly in the groin or umbilical region.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>Smoking: Another Culprit<\/h3>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cNicotine weakens the abdominal wall,\u201d says\u202f<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cooperhealth.org\/doctors\/robert-simons-md\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">Robert Simons, MD, FACS<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, a general surgeon at\u202f<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">Cooper <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Surgical Care at Voorhees. \u201cThis increases the risk of developing a hernia and the risk of recurrence once a hernia is repaired. Smokers are also more likely to develop complications after surgery.\u201d<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>Nonsurgical Treatment<\/h3>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">There is no nonsurgical way to repair a hernia, but some people wear supportive garments to ease discomfort and delay surgery. Incarcerated hernias are common, but if a hernia becomes strangulated, it requires intervention.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">A strangulated hernia occurs when the blood supply to the trapped tissue or organ is cut off. That blood supply must be re-established to prevent permanent damage to the organ or tissue.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cA strangulated hernia is very painful, and people who experience it will call their doctor or go to the emergency room,\u201d Dr. Simons says. \u201cThe strangulated tissue can be relieved, and the hernia can be reduced by using pressure to manipulate it while the patient is under mild sedation. However, if we can\u2019t relieve the strangulation manually, surgery is necessary.\u201d<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>Types of Surgery<\/h3>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Surgical hernia repair involves going into the abdominal cavity, pushing the herniated tissue back through the abdominal wall, and closing the hole. Sometimes the gap is small enough that sutures can be used to close it. A biologic or synthetic mesh is usually used to seal and strengthen the area.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cWe can usually repair a hernia defect of a centimeter or less with sutures and techniques that reduce pressure in the area,\u201d Dr. Simons says. \u201cWith anything larger, we have better success using a mesh material to strengthen the region.\u201d<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>Minimally Invasive Surgery<\/h3>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Minimally invasive surgery is any procedure that is performed through small incisions in the body with instruments that are specially designed to work in tight areas. The abdominal cavity is filled with a gas (typically CO<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">2<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">) to create space for the surgeon to maneuver their tools.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Minimally invasive surgery offers less trauma to the body, minimal scarring, and faster recovery time. Any hernia can be fixed through open surgery, but this technique tends to be used less frequently because of the availability of minimally invasive laparoscopic and robotic techniques.
