Life-changing events, such as car and bicycle accidents, serious falls, and drowning, can happen in an instant.

May is National Trauma Awareness Month. As South Jersey’s only Level I Trauma Center, Cooper University Health Care cares for the most severely injured patients. On average, Cooper treats more than 4,600 trauma patients each year, making it the busiest trauma center in New Jersey. We often see people and their families on the worst day of their lives, so we welcome any opportunity to raise awareness about ways to prevent tragic accidents and protect those we love.

Distracted Driving – Arrive Alive

We live in a world where technology is everywhere, and it’s easy to forget that when we’re behind the wheel. Although we’ve heard the warnings and know the laws, it’s crucial to highlight the dangers of distracted driving. Distracted driving refers to any activity that diverts a driver’s attention from the road, such as texting, eating, or talking on the phone.

“Texting while driving is the leading cause of motor vehicle accidents and fatalities, and the consequences can be devastating,” says John Porter, MD, head of the Division of Trauma Surgery and director of the Center for Trauma Services at Cooper University Health Care.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), 3,522 people were killed as a result of distracted driving in 2021. Additionally, an analysis of New Jersey crash data from 2011 to 2020 showed that more than half of all motor vehicle crashes involved a distracted driver.

NHTSA also reported that 9% of drivers 16 to 24 years old who were involved in fatal crashes in 2020 were distracted at the time of the crash. In addition, 5% of drivers 25 to 34 years old who were involved in fatal crashes were distracted.

It’s important to note that distracted driving is not limited to cell phone use. Other common distractions include eating or drinking, grooming, adjusting the radio or navigation system, and talking to passengers.

“To combat distracted driving, it’s essential to practice safe driving habits, such as keeping your phone out of reach while driving, pulling over to a safe location if you need to make a call or send a message, and avoiding other distractions while behind the wheel,” Dr. Porter says. “By staying focused on the road, we can reduce the number of injuries and fatalities caused by distracted driving.”

Multitasking Dangers

Distractions involve more than just cell phones and other electronic devices. In today’s fast-paced world, we’re often juggling multiple tasks and responsibilities at once. From work deadlines to family obligations, it can feel as if there’s always something vying for our attention. Although multitasking can be a useful skill, it’s important to recognize that there are times when it can be dangerous. Too many distractions pose a threat when someone forgets a child in the car, takes their eyes off a child in the bathtub, or leaves an item near a hot stovetop.

By staying present and aware, we can help reduce the risk of accidents and minimize the impact of trauma.

Bike Safety

Bike safety is another area where people of all ages need to be vigilant. Whether you’re a seasoned cyclist or just starting out, it’s important to wear a helmet, follow traffic laws, and be aware of your surroundings. Additionally, many bike accidents occur because drivers are not paying attention to cyclists on the road, so it’s important for bikers to be as visible as possible and for drivers to share the road.

Water Safety

As we head into the summer months, remember to enjoy the water responsibly. While swimming and boating, be aware of the risks and take appropriate precautions. This might mean wearing a life jacket, swimming with a buddy, or staying out of the water if conditions are unsafe.

Prioritize Safety

The consequences of trauma can be physically, emotionally, and financially devastating. In addition to the immediate impact of an injury or accident, there may also be long-term consequences such as chronic pain, disability, and mental health issues.

Let’s all be more vigilant in preventing trauma by protecting ourselves and those around us.

For more information about Cooper’s Level I Trauma Center, click here.

Para leer en Español, por favor haga clic aquí Accidents happen every day and can affect anyone, no matter their age, gender, or background.
