Other risk factors for stroke include high blood pressure, diabetes, high cholesterol, smoking, and obesity.<\/p>\n<p>Transient ischemic attacks (TIAs), which are sometimes called \u201cmini-strokes,\u201d are brief episodes of stroke-like symptoms that typically last a few minutes and do not cause permanent damage. However, they may be a warning sign of an impending stroke. These episodes can be as serious as a stroke; anyone who has a TIA should seek immediate medical attention, even if the symptoms have resolved.<\/p>\n<h3>What are the signs and symptoms of a stroke?<\/h3>\n<p>The signs and symptoms of a stroke can vary depending on the type of stroke and which part of the brain is affected. However, there are some common warning signs. These include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Sudden numbness or weakness on one side of the body<\/li>\n<li>Sudden trouble speaking or difficulty understanding others<\/li>\n<li>Sudden trouble seeing<\/li>\n<li>Sudden trouble walking, dizziness, or loss of balance\/coordination<\/li>\n<li>Worst headache of your life<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>The acronym <u>BE FAST<\/u> can also help you recognize the signs of a stroke:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>B \u2013 Balance:<\/strong> Difficulties or sudden loss of coordination or ability to walk<br \/>\n<strong>E \u2013 Eyesight:<\/strong> Sudden vision loss<br \/>\n<strong>F \u2013 Face<\/strong> drooping or numbness, especially on one side<br \/>\n<strong>A \u2013 Arm<\/strong> weakness or numbness, especially on one side<br \/>\n<strong>S \u2013 Speech<\/strong> difficulty, slurred speech, or trouble speaking or understanding others<br \/>\n<strong>T \u2013 Time<\/strong> to call emergency services right away if any of these symptoms are present<\/p>\n<h3>What should you do if you think someone is having a stroke or TIA?<\/h3>\n<p>Time is of the essence when it comes to stroke. If you or someone you know experiences any of the signs or symptoms mentioned above, call emergency services right away.
