Not only does staying hydrated regulate body temperature, but it also helps keep our joints lubricated and can even help prevent infections. Research has shown that proper hydration can improve cognition, decrease joint pain, and promote better overall health.

“Generally speaking, our bodies are made up of 50% to 60% water, which is essential for many bodily functions,” says Krista King, MD, a primary care physician with Cooper Care Alliance. “Proper hydration keeps our bodies working well.”

Staying properly hydrated helps our bodies by:

Regulating body temperature: Sweating, our body’s natural cooling system, helps us maintain a stable internal temperature. Adequate hydration replenishes the fluids lost through sweat, ensuring our bodies can effectively regulate temperature.

Supporting digestion and nutrient absorption: Fluids help break down food and enable our bodies to absorb essential nutrients. A well-hydrated body prevents constipation by softening the stool and promoting regular bowel movements.

Transporting nutrients and oxygen: Water is the primary component of blood, helping it to efficiently transport nutrients, oxygen, and hormones to cells throughout the body.

Keeping joints lubricated and protecting tissues: Adequate hydration helps minimize joint friction and reduces the risk of joint pain or injury. It also helps cushion sensitive tissues, such as the spinal cord and brain.

What to Drink for Proper Hydration

Water: “When it comes to staying hydrated, water is the best choice,” Dr. King says. “It is readily available, calorie-free, and contains the electrolytes necessary to keep the body running as intended. But if you need a break from water, there are other beverages that work almost as well.”

Herbal tea: Herbal teas, such as chamomile, peppermint, or ginger, can provide hydration while offering additional health benefits. Be careful with caffeinated herbal teas because excessive caffeine intake can have a diuretic effect, promoting urination and removing fluid from the body.

Infused water: If you like a touch of flavor, infusing your water with slices of lemon, lime, or cucumber can add a refreshing twist without the added sugars or artificial flavors found in many other beverages.

Electrolyte beverages: During intense physical activity or in cases of excessive sweating, replenishing electrolytes is important. Sports drinks or electrolyte-enhanced water can help restore electrolyte balance; however, these drinks can be high in sugar and should be used primarily for moderate to high-intensity exercise.

Three Types of Beverages to Avoid When You Need to Hydrate

All liquids are not created equal. Many can dehydrate your body instead of providing it with the fluid it needs. These include alcohol and sugary beverages such as soda or energy drinks. Although they may seem refreshing in the moment, their high sugar content and diuretic effects can adversely affect your body. Here are three types of beverages to keep on the “don’t” list when hydration is your goal.

Sugary beverages: Soft drinks, fruit juices, energy drinks, and sweetened teas are often high in added sugars and can lead to dehydration. These beverages may provide temporary satisfaction but do not replenish fluids effectively and can contribute to weight gain and other health issues.

Drinks high in caffeine: Although moderate consumption of caffeinated beverages such as coffee and tea are generally considered safe, excessive amounts can have a diuretic effect, increasing fluid loss and potentially leading to dehydration. If you enjoy caffeinated drinks, be sure to balance them with sufficient water intake.

Alcohol: Alcohol also acts as a diuretic. If you consume alcohol, remember to alternate alcoholic beverages with water, and always drink responsibly.

How much water do I need each day?

There is no one-size-fits-all answer for the amount of water you should consume each day. The average recommendation is to drink at least eight, 8-ounce glasses of water daily, but this can vary depending on individual needs, physical activity levels, and climate.

“Depending on which study you look at, 40% to 80% of people in the U.S. don’t drink enough water,” Dr. King says. “And it can be hard to stay properly hydrated, especially when we are busy.”

Another recommendation is to drink a half an ounce of water for each pound you weight. So, if a person weighs 180 pounds, they should drink 90 ounces of water a day.

“Your body will tell you if you need hydration,” Dr. King says. “A dry mouth, feeling tired or dizzy, and having dark urine are key signs that you need to drink some water.”

Here are some tips for staying hydrated:

Drink a glass of water first thing in the morning when you wake up.

Carry a reusable water bottle with you so you always have access to fluids.

Keep track of how much water you drink each day using an app or journal.

Eat foods high in water content, such as fruits and vegetables. Watermelon is 90% water. Oranges, grapefruit, honeydew, and cantaloupe also have high water content. Vegetables such as celery, cucumbers, tomatoes, green peppers, and romaine lettuce will boost your fluid intake.

“Staying properly hydrated does much more for us than most of us realize,” Dr. King says. “Drinking enough water is one of the simplest things we can do to improve and maintain health and wellness.”

Krista King, MD, sees patients in Turnersville and Delran and is currently accepting new patients.
