Sudden cardiac arrest is also the leading cause of death in young athletes.

As we head into the summer months, it’s important to know that hot, humid weather can place stress on the heart. Your body has to work harder to keep its core temperature at normal levels, placing extra strain on your heart, lungs, and kidneys. You can be at even greater risk if you have a heart condition.

Cardiac arrest is a life-threatening emergency that requires immediate intervention. That’s why it is important for everyone to know the basics of cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and automated external defibrillator (AED) use.

“Knowing these skills can empower individuals to react quickly and provide lifesaving assistance to those experiencing cardiac arrest,” says Michael Riley, Director of the Center for Resuscitation Education and Community Engagement at Cooper University Health Care. “By jumping into action, you can double or triple a person’s chances of survival.”

The Significance of CPR

When sudden cardiac arrest occurs, every second counts. If you suspect someone is having a cardiac event, call 911 immediately. Since the national average for ambulance response time is approximately 8 to 10 minutes, bystanders who witness a cardiac arrest have a unique opportunity to provide assistance before professional medical help arrives by performing CPR.

Providing CPR doesn’t mean you must use mouth-to-mouth breathing. Hands-only CPR, which means giving continuous chest compressions without rescue breaths, can be just as effective as conventional CPR when given in the first few minutes of a cardiac arrest.

“During CPR, you should push hard on the chest at a rate of 100 to 120 compressions per minute,” Riley says. “The beat of the classic disco song ‘Stayin’ Alive’ is a perfect match for this.”

Riley offers these tips for performing hands-only CPR:

Place the palm of one hand directly on the center of the person’s chest, place your other hand on top of it, and lock your fingers together. Then lock your elbows to keep your arms straight, and press straight down on the chest, going at least two inches down with each compression.

The chest needs to recoil fully between compressions, so you will need to take your full weight off the victim between compressions. Complete chest recoil is essential because it allows the chest to fully expand, which creates negative pressure that pulls blood back into the chest and cardiac tissues.

The Role of AEDs

AEDs are portable devices that deliver a controlled electric shock to restore the heart’s rhythm during cardiac arrest. AEDs are designed to be easily accessible in public spaces, workplaces, and fitness facilities. They are often located in visible and easily accessible areas, such as near entrances, reception desks, or security stations.

“The best thing about AEDs is that you don’t need any formal training to use them,” Riley says. “All you have to do is turn it on and follow the prompts. The machine talks to you and walks you through each step to provide lifesaving care.”

It’s also important to note that although AEDs are becoming more common in public spaces, their availability can vary by location. Some AEDs are stored in visible cabinets with clear signage, and others may be accessible on request from staff members or security personnel.

“If you frequent a gym, swim club, or school and don’t see an AED sign, ask someone if they have one and where it’s stored,” Riley advises. “There are also apps and websites such as AED Locator or PulsePoint that provide real-time information on the locations of registered AEDs in certain areas.”

Training Professionals and the Public

The Cooper Center for Resuscitation Education and Community Engagement certifies nearly 4,000 health care professionals each year in Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS), Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS), Basic Life Support (BLS), and AHA instructor courses. The center also provides education and skills sessions related to CPR, AED use, and first aid to the community.

“By equipping communities with these essential skills, we can create a network of potential first responders,” Riley says. “At Cooper, we strive to educate and empower individuals to provide immediate assistance and increase the chances of survival.”

The Cooper Center for Resuscitation Education and Community Engagement offers free courses to community groups that provide hands-on skills to practice CPR and AED use. Click here to learn more and complete a request form to schedule an event in your community.

The Ultimate Life Hack: Habilidades de CPR y AED
