The culprit might just be an iron deficiency, also known as iron deficiency anemia.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.cooperhealth.org\/ehealth\/2023\/10\/12\/signs-you-may-have-an-iron-deficiency\/#espanol\">Para leer en Espa\u00f1ol, por favor haga clic aqu\u00ed<\/a> <\/p>\n<h3>Why Is Iron Important for Your Health?<\/h3>\n<p>\u201cHealthy iron levels are very important to overall wellness,\u201d says <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cooperhealth.org\/doctors\/brandyn-chinn-do\">Brandyn Chinn, DO<\/a>, primary care physician at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cooperhealth.org\/\">Cooper University Health Care<\/a>. \u201cIron helps maintain important bodily functions, including the production of hemoglobin \u2014 the molecule in red blood cells that carries oxygen through your body.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Iron also helps maintain healthy cells, including those that make up your skin, hair, and nails.<\/p>\n<p>The three main causes of iron deficiency anemia are blood loss, problems absorbing iron, and insufficient iron in your diet.<strong> Other causes may be:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Gastrointestinal (GI) tract bleeding caused by inflammatory bowel disease, stomach ulcers, or colon cancer<\/li>\n<li>Regular use of aspirin or nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), such as ibuprofen and naproxen, which can also cause bleeding in the GI tract<\/li>\n<li>Traumatic injury or surgery<\/li>\n<li>Urinary tract bleeding<\/li>\n<li>Problems absorbing iron such as celiac disease or bariatric surgery<\/li>\n<li>Kidney disease<\/li>\n<li>Vegetarian or vegan diets, because the body does not absorb iron from vegetables as well as it does from meat, poultry, and fish<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Preventing Iron Deficiency<\/h3>\n<p>A healthy diet with good sources of iron and vitamin C can help you keep your iron at optimal levels. Why vitamin C? It helps your body absorb iron. Good sources of vitamin C include oranges, strawberries, and tomatoes.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Good sources of iron include:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Beef, pork, or lamb, especially organ meats, such as liver<\/li>\n<li>Chicken, turkey, and duck, especially the liver and dark meat<\/li>\n<li>Fish, especially shellfish, sardines, and anchovies<\/li>\n<li>Leafy green members of the cabbage family, including broccoli, kale, turnip greens, and collard greens<\/li>\n<li>Legumes, including lima beans, peas, pinto beans, and black-eyed peas<\/li>\n<li>Iron-enriched pasta, grains, rice, and cereals<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Symptoms of Iron Deficiency Anemia<\/h3>\n<p>\u201cA diagnosis of anemia can be hard to figure out because the symptoms can point to a number of issues,\u201d Dr. Chinn says. \u201cAnd if a person has a mild or moderate deficiency, they may have no symptoms at all. But there are signs everyone should pay attention to.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>If you experience one or more of the following, it may be caused by an iron deficiency.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Fatigue<\/li>\n<li>Dizziness or lightheadedness<\/li>\n<li>Cold hands and feet<\/li>\n<li>Pale skin<\/li>\n<li>Generalized weakness<\/li>\n<li>Rapid heartbeat<\/li>\n<li>Pounding or \u201cwhooshing\u201d in the ears<\/li>\n<li>Headache, especially with activity<\/li>\n<li>Craving for ice or clay \u2014 known as pagophagia or pica<\/li>\n<li>Sore or smooth tongue<\/li>\n<li>Brittle nails or hair loss<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>If you have a more serious deficit, you may experience shortness of breath and chest pain because your body may not be receiving the oxygen it needs to function properly.<\/p>\n<h3>Why Is It Important to Get Enough Iron?<\/h3>\n<p>\u201cPeople may not take an iron deficiency seriously because for many of us feeling tired or run-down seems \u00a0can be fairly commonplace due to our busy and often stressful lives,\u201d Dr. Chinn says. \u201cBut untreated anemia can lead to serious health complications.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Beyond fatigue and headaches, iron deficiency anemia can lead to restless leg syndrome. It also can bring about heart problems such as an abnormally fast heartbeat (tachycardia) or\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nhsinform.scot\/illnesses-and-conditions\/heart-and-blood-vessels\/conditions\/heart-failure#about-heart-failure\">heart failure<\/a>, which occurs when your heart can\u2019t pump enough blood at the right pressure.<\/p>\n<h3>When Should You See Your Doctor?<\/h3>\n<p>\u201cAt your annual wellness exam, your health care provider may order a complete blood count (CBC) as part of your baseline bloodwork,\u201d Dr. Chinn says. \u201cA CBC is often the first test to look for abnormal iron levels in the blood.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dr. Chinn recommends contacting your primary care provider if you experience symptoms between annual visits or if you do not see them regularly.<\/p>\n<p>If your iron level is low, your provider may order additional tests to help find out why.<\/p>\n<p>Those tests might include those looking for:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Blood in the stool<\/li>\n<li>Abnormalities in the gastrointestinal tract<\/li>\n<li>Blood or hemoglobin in the urine<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>\u201cFor women who have abnormal or heavy menstrual blood loss, a health care provider may recommend a gynecologic evaluation that may include a pelvic ultrasound or uterine biopsy,\u201d Dr. Chinn explains.<\/p>\n<h3>How Is Iron Deficiency Anemia Treated?<\/h3>\n<p>Several treatments can be used to treat anemia, depending on its cause and severity.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Iron supplements are the most commonly prescribed treatment for anemia.<\/strong> It may take three to six months for these pills to effectively restore your iron to normal levels.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Intravenous or IV iron<\/strong> is sometimes ordered for people with serious iron deficiency anemia or long-term conditions. This treatment takes significantly less time to be effective.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Blood transfusions<\/strong> quickly increase the amount of red blood cells and iron in your blood.
