Quitting smoking at any age can lower the risk.”

Secondhand smoke exposure also raises lung cancer risk. Non-smokers who live with a smoker have a 20-30% greater chance of developing lung cancer.

Other lung cancer risk factors include:

Radon gas exposure – Radon is a radioactive gas that can accumulate in homes and increase lung cancer risk.

Air pollution – Long-term exposure to car exhaust, chemicals, and other pollutants, particularly in urban areas, may raise lung cancer risk.

Occupational exposures – Certain workplaces may expose individuals to carcinogens, such as asbestos, arsenic, diesel exhaust, and other chemicals and minerals, which can increase the risk of lung cancer.

Prior lung disease – People with lung diseases like COPD are at higher risk.

Family history – Having a parent or sibling with lung cancer increases risk even without smoking.

Lung Cancer Symptoms

Lung cancer, like pancreatic, ovarian, and some other cancers, is often diagnosed after it has spread. Symptoms of lung cancer usually do not appear until the disease is already at an advanced stage. Even when lung cancer does cause symptoms, many people may mistake them for other problems, such as an infection or long-term effects from smoking. This may delay the diagnosis.

The most common symptoms of lung cancer are:

A cough that does not go away or gets worse

Coughing up blood or rust-colored phlegm

Chest pain that is often worse with deep breathing, coughing, or laughing

Hoarseness

Loss of appetite

Unexplained weight loss

Shortness of breath

Feeling tired or weak

Infections such as bronchitis and pneumonia that don’t go away or keep coming back

New onset of wheezing

“Most of these symptoms are more likely to be caused by something other than lung cancer,” Dr. Shersher says. “If you have any of these issues, it’s important to see your doctor right away so the cause can be diagnosed and treated, if necessary.”

Lung Cancer Screening

According to the National Cancer Institute, 57% of lung cancer is diagnosed at stage 4, when the cancer has spread (metastasized) to both lungs, the area around the lungs, or distant organs.

Lung screening using a low-dose CT scan looks for signs of cancer before symptoms arise.
