In the U.S., it is estimated that more than 30 million men are affected by ED each year and, statistically, 1 in 10 men will experience it in their lifetime. Men who are older than 40 are three times more likely to have ED at some point, and this risk only increases with age.

Although talking about such a personal topic can be challenging, you should feel comfortable being honest with your doctor. Help is available.

“ED is a topic that affects more people than we realize because so many men, and their partners, are hesitant to talk about it,” says Allen Seftel, MD, FACS, Head, Division of Urology at Cooper University Health Care. “ED is highly treatable, but only if there is an open line of communication between you and your doctor. I can promise that our team of urology experts will approach your concerns with sensitivity and respect.”

Understanding ED

The first thing you should know about ED is what it is NOT. Many people mistake ED for a low sex drive or an issue with ejaculating, such as premature ejaculation or delayed ejaculation. (Cooper can also help with these issues, click here for more information.) ED IS the inability to get or maintain an erection firm enough for sex.

There are many possible causes of ED. The sexual process involves a complex system, and there are countless factors at play for every person. For men, arousal involves an increase in blood flow to the penis that results in an erection, and a dysfunction can occur at any point during that process.

Often, ED can be a symptom or byproduct of a physical or psychological issue, disease, or injury.

Physical conditions such as heart disease, high cholesterol, high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes, sleep disorders, depression, alcoholism, drug addiction, or being treated for prostate cancer (surgery, hormone therapy, or radiation) will increase the risk of ED. Injury or surgery to the pelvic area or spine may affect blood flow or nerve signals. It is also common for psychological factors to play a role in ED.

ED is more common in people who:

are older.

have other health conditions.

have had an injury to the spinal cord, penis, or pelvis.

take medication, such as antidepressants or blood pressure medications.

have anxiety or stress.

are overweight.

smoke

“Prescription medications like those for high blood pressure, anxiety, cancer, depression, your heart, opioids, and certain hormone drugs have been known to contribute to ED,” Dr. Seftel says. “But do not stop taking any medications without having a conversation with your doctor first.”

Getting More Comfortable

There are plenty of ways to help prevent ED, such as maintaining proper health, seeking help for emotional and mental health illness, and avoiding substances like alcohol and cigarettes, which will worsen ED. Fortunately, there are many ways to find out if your ED is a symptom of something larger, as treating the larger issue may help resolve your ED.

ED is only a problem if the act of sex has become consistently impossible. Having occasional trouble maintaining an erection is not something you should worry about but take note if it becomes persistent. If you are unsure if you have ED, talk to your doctor, and be honest – it’s the only way they can help.

ED is typically diagnosed through a variety of tests and a discussion of a person’s sexual and medical history. Testing for ED can be in the form of lab tests or a physical examination to search for issues with hormones, circulation, nervous system, or the anatomy.

Doctors may also use a psychological evaluation to see if there are any contributing mental health factors as well as consult long-term sexual partners if both parties are comfortable talking about the issue.

ED Treatments

The treatment for ED depends on the cause. It may include prescription medications, devices, or surgery. But lifestyle changes, such as diet, exercise, and stress reduction, can also help improve ED.

Treatment approaches vary by patient. Your health, medical history, ability to tolerate certain drugs, and personal preference will all play a part in deciding which treatment is best for you. Your doctor may also recommend therapy if your ED is linked to your medical history or other mental health issue.

At Cooper, we know that addressing ED requires empathy, support, and open dialogue. By fostering a safe environment for discussion, we can help you get the support and guidance you need.

“Discussing ED does not have to be difficult. We simply need to change our attitudes toward men’s health and open a dialogue,” Dr. Seftel says. “If you don’t feel comfortable talking to your current doctor, consider a new provider.
