This easy-to-learn social sport is a good low-impact exercise and one of the fastest-growing sports in the U.S.

The Sports & Fitness Industry Association (SFIA) stated that in 2022, there were 8.9 million people playing pickleball and the number of participants was increasing by 85% year-over-year.

The sport, which combines features of tennis, badminton, and pingpong, is played using a perforated ball (like a wiffle ball) and hard paddles on a court approximately half the size of a tennis court. The compact nature of the playing “field” and small paddles (compared with tennis) attracts people of all ages and fitness levels.

While pickleball has been around since the late 1960s, its new-found popularity is resulting in a growing number of injuries sustained by players.

“Individuals of all ages and athletic abilities think they can simply grab a paddle and play without considering if they are in good enough shape,” says Matthew T. Kleiner, MD, orthopaedic surgeon and sports medicine specialist at Cooper University Health Care. “But pickleball is more rigorous than most people realize, which leads to injury — especially in older players.”

According to one study, 85% of pickleball injuries happen to players 60 years or older.

One reason for mishaps is that the game moves faster than many people realize. By some estimates, the ball can travel up to 40 miles per hour during a serve and takes less than half a second to travel from one paddle to another. Although the velocity is considerably less than that of a served tennis ball, older people and others with diminished speed and agility can find themselves pushed beyond their capacity to return the ball or get out of its way. The result is often injury.

According to the National Institutes of Health (NIH), the most common pickleball injuries among people 60 years or older include:

Strains and sprains —three-and-a-half times more common among men.

Fractures —three-and-a-half times more common among women. Of the men who did sustain fractures, they were more likely to affect the lower body, whereas women tended to have wrist or hand fractures.

Contusions — caused by slips, trips, falls, or being hit by the ball.

Joint pain — often due to arthritis flare-ups.

Tendonitis of the wrist, elbow, and rotator cuff — inflammation caused by repetitive motion.

Eye injuries — corneal abrasion, Berlin’s edema (damage to the retina’s outer layers, which can cause decreased vision for several hours), and torn or detached retina because of getting hit in or near the eye by a ball.

Tips to Avoid Pickleball Injuries

“While not all injuries are preventable, there are things pickleball players can do to reduce their chances of getting hurt,” Dr. Kleiner says.

Don’t overdo it. As with any new activity, starting slow and increasing playing time is important as you become more conditioned and skilled. Doing so may reduce the chance of overuse or traumatic injuries caused by wear and tear on the joints and natural, age-related decline in coordination. Wearing wrist, knee, or ankle braces can also help.

Warm up. Preparing your muscles for play isn’t just for pros. Take 5 to 10 minutes to warm up before taking to the court.

“A good routine includes some light jogging and stretching of all the major muscle groups, including the calves, quads, hamstrings, inner thighs, lower back, shoulders, elbows, and wrists,” Dr. Kleiner says. “Once you get on the court, do some short court volleys, serves, lobs, and smashes before beginning competition.”

Use the right equipment. Get shoes designed for tennis or pickleball to help prevent ankle and foot injuries. They provide better side-to-side support and court traction than a walking or running shoe. Use a paddle with a properly sized handle to decrease the risk of wrist and elbow injuries and tendinitis.

Wear eye protection. Because of its speed and the relatively small size of the playing area, a ball directed to the eye can hit you before you have time to react. Even though eye protection is not required in pickleball, it can reduce the risk of injury.

“Polycarbonate wraparound safety goggles provide the maximum level of protection,” Dr. Kleiner says. “But even sunglasses or regular glasses offer some protection.”

Watch your form. Despite the “anyone can do it” attitude that has been ascribed to pickleball, it’s wise to take the time to learn the correct form, technique, and footwork.

“Many players tend to rely too much on their arms instead of using the momentum from their whole body,” Dr. Kleiner says. “Sports wisdom tells us that the energy from our legs, especially the hips, is key for getting real power and reduces strain on other body parts.”

Cool down. Once play is over, cool down with several minutes of walking and stretching.

“If you are not conditioned, some level of muscle soreness is natural,” Dr. Kleiner says. “But doing warm-up and cool-down exercises can minimize the discomfort.”

Stay hydrated. Staying properly hydrated improves circulation, regulates body temperature, and improves brain function, among other benefits, all of which keep you performing at your best and less likely to hurt yourself.

When to Call a Doctor

Minor aches, pains, and swelling that come with exertion can usually be treated at home using the RICE approach:

Rest

Ice

Compression

Elevation

However, if pain or swelling persists for a couple of days, call your health care provider.

“If you get hit in the eye, contact an ophthalmologist right away if you notice a change or loss of vision,” Dr. Kleiner says. “Other reasons to get help include substantial pain, bleeding, or bruising.”

Dr. Kleiner also advises people to consult their health care provider before trying pickleball or any other type of new exercise.

“We are thrilled that pickleball is getting more people out and moving, as being active is essential to overall physical and mental health,” Dr. Kleiner says. “But be sure the activities you choose are suited for you. If you want to try something more strenuous than your regular exercise, your health care provider can advise you on your readiness or suggest conditioning techniques to prepare you for your new interest.”

Click here to learn more about Cooper’s Sports Medicine services.

No te excedas.
