Instead, doctors closely monitor the patient for any changes in the cancer. This option can also be a good choice for patients who have other health issues that could be made worse by cancer treatment or who have a limited life expectancy.

Surgery to remove the prostate

If surgery is required, MD Anderson at Cooper urologic surgeons use advanced, minimally invasive techniques whenever possible. “These techniques use smaller incisions, which help patients heal faster, spend less time in the hospital, return to normal activities sooner, and have less scarring,” Dr. Tomaszewski says.

“A new technique, called Retzius-sparing prostatectomy, protects the pelvic floor during surgery. This reduces the chances of incontinence after surgery and improves sexual function. “Our team is one of the few in the region offering this specialized and complex surgical approach due to the advanced skills needed,” he explains.

Radiation therapy and radiopharmaceutical therapy

“Radiation therapy destroys cancer cells and prevents cells from growing or spreading,” says Gary Eastwick, MD, a radiation oncologist at MD Anderson at Cooper. This treatment option can cure or control cancer, or it can be used to relieve symptoms. There are different types of radiation therapy, which may be used in combination with other therapies.

“MD Anderson Cancer Center at Cooper is the only cancer center in the region to offer MR guided radiation treatment, a technology that combines magnetic resonance (MR) imaging and a linear accelerator into one device,” Dr. Eastwick says. “The MR guided radiation treatment tracks tumors in real time, allowing radiation oncologists to target cancer more precisely, which helps protect healthy tissue and reduces side effects.”

Lutetium-177 vipivotide tetraxetan PSMA therapy is a new type of radiation treatment that targets a specific molecule (called PSMA) found on prostate cancer cells that encourages the growth of cancer,” Dr. Eastwick says. “The therapy is given through an intravenous infusion and is used for men whose cancer has spread or who have already tried other treatments.”

Medical management of prostate cancer

Some men may be candidates for medical management of their cancer.

Hormone therapy uses man-made hormones or other medication to block cancer cells from getting the natural hormones (androgens) needed to grow. While hormone therapy is not known to cure cancer on its own, it can help shrink tumors or slow their growth.

Chemotherapy uses powerful drugs to attack cancer cells. These are given intravenously or taken as pills or liquid. Chemotherapy can be combined with other treatments like surgery, radiation, or immunotherapy, and it can be given before or after other treatments.

Immunotherapy uses your body’s immune system to fight cancer. Cancer cells can hide from the immune system by producing certain proteins. Immunotherapy works by blocking these proteins, allowing your immune system to attack the cancer.

Targeted therapies focus on proteins that control how cancer cells grow, divide, and spread. This is the foundation of precision medicine and can be used on its own or in combination with other cancer treatments.

Clinical trials: Opening new doors to cancer treatment

One of the benefits of receiving care at a large cancer center like MD Anderson at Cooper is access to groundbreaking clinical trials of new treatments that may be more effective than standard treatment.

A Multidisciplinary Team Approach

Patients who choose MD Anderson at Cooper for their prostate cancer treatment are cared for by a team of specialists, not just one doctor. This team includes urologists, medical oncologists, radiation oncologists, and other experts who work together to create the best treatment plan.

A key member of this team is the nurse navigator, who acts as a patient advocate, educator, and guide. Patients also have access to genetic, nutritional, and behavioral health counselors and social workers who provide medical, emotional, and social support. These experts understand the unique challenges and concerns men with prostate cancer face and offer compassionate care that respects each patient’s dignity.

“Hearing that you have prostate cancer is never easy,” Dr. Tomaszewski says. “But advances in research and treatment have improved care, quality of life, and overall survival rates.”

Click here to learn more about the Prostate Cancer Center at MD Anderson at Cancer Center Cooper.
