It rarely affects women younger than 20, and more than 15% of cases occur in women over 65, particularly those who have not received regular screenings.

With increased awareness and screening, cervical cancer is often preventable and highly treatable when detected early. Here are five key facts to know about cervical cancer.

1.) HPV Is the Leading Cause

Human papillomavirus (HPV) is the most common sexually transmitted infection in the United States, with about 80% of people infected by age 50. According to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), more than 90% of cervical cancer cases are caused by high-risk types of HPV. There are two types of low-risk HPV that causes genital warts and high-risk types that can cause cervical cancer. HPV is mainly spread through intimate skin-to-skin contact, usually during sexual activity.

“Fortunately, most women infected with HPV do not develop cervical cancer,” says Christina Chu, MD, FACOG, gynecologic oncologist at MD Anderson Cancer Center at Cooper. “However, persistent infections without intervention can lead to serious health issues.”

2.) Early Detection Saves Lives

Cervical cancer rates in the U.S. have dropped significantly due to routine Pap tests and HPV screenings. These tests can detect precancerous changes in cervical cells before cancer develops. These screenings not only identify early-stage cancers but also help manage any HPV-related complications.

The CDC recommends women begin Pap tests at age 21 and follow their doctor’s advice on frequency.

3.) Symptoms Often Go Unnoticed

Cervical cancer is sometimes called a “silent killer” because it can develop without noticeable symptoms.
