Every year in the United States, trauma sends more than 100,000 people a day to the emergency room\u2014adding up to 37 million visits a year. Of those, 2.6 million result in hospital admissions. Many of these injuries are caused by falls, motor vehicle crashes, and an alarming rise in distracted driving incidents.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>Preventing Falls<\/h3>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Falls remain a top reason for trauma admissions, especially among older adults. One in four adults over age 65 will fall each year, and falls are the leading cause of injury-related deaths in this age group.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cFalls may not sound dramatic, but they are one of the most common and harmful types of injuries we treat, particularly in older adults,\u201d Dr. Porter says. \u201cFalls can lead to long hospital stays, loss of mobility, and a serious decline in overall health. Every shift, trauma teams across the country see the devastating impact of high-speed collisions: shattered bones, internal injuries, traumatic brain injuries, and lives cut short.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The single most effective way to reduce the risk of death or serious injury in a crash? Wear a seat belt\u2014every time, no matter how short the trip.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cSeat belts don\u2019t just reduce injury; they save lives,\u201d Dr. Porter says. \u201cWe\u2019ve seen patients walk away from crashes because they were buckled in\u2014and others who didn\u2019t survive because they weren\u2019t.\u201d<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Make sure everyone in the vehicle is properly restrained, including children in age- and size-appropriate car or booster seats. Scrolling. Talking. Distracted driving has become one of the leading causes of crashes in the U.S. and the statistics are sobering. In 2022, more than 3,500 people were killed and an estimated 362,000 were injured in crashes involving distracted drivers, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cUsing a cell phone while driving increases the risk of an accident by 400%, and the effects can be devastating,\u201d Dr. Porter says. \u201cAs trauma surgeons, we see firsthand the aftermath\u2014young lives lost, families shattered, and injuries that forever change a person\u2019s future.
