That\u2019s why it\u2019s so important to understand your personal and family risk.\u201d<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>Understanding Genetic and Family Risk<\/h3>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The strongest connection between breast and ovarian cancer is genetic. Patterns of cancer across generations \u2013 including breast, ovarian, and colon cancer \u2013 may indicate an inherited risk. Genetic counseling is important because a counselor can review your family history, recommend the most appropriate tests, and guide proactive steps, such as enhanced screening, preventive medications, or surgery if needed.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cWhile BRCA1 and BRCA2 are the most well-known genes linked to breast and ovarian cancer, other genes such as PALB2, ATM, and RAD51 can also raise risk,\u201d says <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cooperhealth.org\/doctors\/rebecca-jaslow-md\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Rebecca Jaslow, MD<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, a hematologist\/medical oncologist and Co-Director, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cooperhealth.org\/services\/cancer-genetics-program\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">William G. Symptoms often don\u2019t appear until the disease is advanced, which makes early detection difficult. Uterine cancer, the most common gynecologic cancer, is on the rise in the U.S., with obesity and hormonal factors playing a role. One important symptom to be aware of is abnormal vaginal bleeding, especially after menopause.
