Breast density refers to the amount of glandular and fibrous tissue compared with fatty tissue.

Women with dense breasts have more glandular and fibrous tissue and less fatty tissue. Breast density isn’t something you can determine by how your breasts look or feel. It can only be identified through breast imaging, such as a mammogram.

On a mammogram, dense tissue appears as solid white areas, which can make it harder to detect abnormalities.

Why Do Some Women Have Dense Breasts?

The exact reasons for differences in breast density aren’t fully understood. However, certain factors make some women more likely to have dense breasts. Hormone levels, body composition, and genetics all play a role in breast density.

Age. Breast tissue often becomes less dense with age, especially after menopause. However, some women continue to have dense breasts in their 50s, 60s, and beyond.

Lower body mass index (BMI). Women with less body fat are more likely to have dense breast tissue compared with women who have more body fat.

Hormone therapy. Women who take combination hormone therapy to manage menopause symptoms are more likely to have dense breasts.

Breast density can change over time, which is another reason to review your mammogram results regularly.

Why Does Breast Density Matter?

Finding breast cancer early is important, and dense breast tissue can make it more challenging for doctors to spot potential problems on a mammogram.

“Looking at dense breasts with mammography is like looking through a cloud, making small tumors harder to detect,” Dr. Lopez says. “Additionally, dense breast tissue is itself a risk factor for developing breast cancer, although researchers don’t fully understand why.”

The good news is that advances in breast imaging can help doctors get a clearer picture.

Today, 3D mammography is the standard technology for breast cancer screening. Unlike traditional mammography, which produces flat images, 3D mammography takes multiple X-rays from different angles to create a more detailed view of the breast. This can help doctors distinguish dense tissue from potential abnormalities.

Depending on a woman’s breast density and other risk factors, additional imaging, such as breast ultrasound, contrast-enhanced mammography, or breast MRI, may also be recommended.

Cooper Norcross Health’s breast imaging centers have earned the American College of Radiology’s Breast Imaging Center of Excellence designation, recognizing their commitment to high standards in breast imaging services.

Do You Need Additional Screening?

Being told you have dense breasts doesn’t automatically mean you need more tests. Your health care team will consider your breast density along with other factors, including your age, family history, and overall breast cancer risk.

For women who have questions about their breast density or screening recommendations, the breast cancer experts at MD Anderson at Cooper offer a specialized Dense Breast Clinic.

The clinic provides a comprehensive evaluation that includes a physical breast examination, a review of previous imaging studies, and an assessment of other breast cancer risk factors.
