Things like high blood pressure, smoking, obesity, stress, and family history can all impact your heart, but one of the most common risk factors is high cholesterol. Our bodies can’t function without cholesterol, but we can make lifestyle changes to keep it at a healthy level.

“Anyone can be at risk for high cholesterol,” says cardiologist Perry Weinstock, MD, FACC, Head of the Division of Cardiology at Cooper University Health Care and a member provider at Cooper and Inspira Cardiac Care. “However, cholesterol levels tend to increase with age, so starting healthy habits when you’re young or learning new routines when you’re older can help keep your cholesterol low.”

#1. Good vs Bad Cholesterol: What’s the Difference?

Cholesterol is a waxy substance made in the liver that travels through the blood in different types of bundles called lipoproteins. Low-density lipoprotein (LDL), known as “bad” cholesterol, can build up in the arteries and cause them to narrow. High-density lipoprotein (HDL), known as “good” cholesterol, carries the LDL cholesterol away from the arteries and back to the liver to be broken down.

Too much of the bad kind (or not enough of the good kind) increases the risk that cholesterol will slowly build up in – or even block – your blood vessels, particularly affecting your heart and brain, putting you at risk for heart disease or stroke.

#2. Know Your Risks and Your Numbers

“High cholesterol is mainly caused by eating fatty foods and not getting enough exercise, but it can be hereditary,” Dr. Weinstock says. “High cholesterol doesn’t have symptoms, which is why I encourage everyone to get annual blood work and review the results with their physician.”

A standard blood test will include a lipid panel (cholesterol panel). This measures the levels of cholesterol and triglycerides (a type of fat) in your blood. High cholesterol and triglyceride levels can increase your risk of heart disease and stroke.

“By tracking lipoprotein levels over time,” Dr. Weinstock says, “I can work with my patients to stay on top of their cholesterol and triglyceride levels and make appropriate adjustments to keep them in an optimal range to reduce risk.”

Here’s a quick guide of healthy and unhealthy lipoprotein levels.

Total cholesterol level:

Less than 160 is best.

160 to 199 is borderline high.

200 or more means you are at increased risk for heart disease.

LDL cholesterol level:

Below 100 is recommended for people who have a higher risk of heart disease. Higher risk factors include obesity, high blood pressure, diabetes, family history of heart disease, and smoking. Many experts recommend that people with heart disease or blood vessel disease should try to get their LDL cholesterol well below 70 and preferably below 55.

100 to 129 is borderline high.

130 or more means you are at higher risk for heart disease.

HDL cholesterol level:

60 or higher is associated with a reduced risk of heart disease in most, but not all, cases.

Less than 40 means you are at higher risk for heart disease.

Triglyceride level:

Less than 150 is normal.

150 to 199 is borderline high.

200 to 499 is high.

500 or higher is very high.
