{"id":2480,"date":"2007-07-01T10:23:23","date_gmt":"2007-07-01T14:23:23","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/ehealth.cooperhealth.org\/?p=2480"},"modified":"2007-07-01T10:23:23","modified_gmt":"2007-07-01T14:23:23","slug":"walking-in-good-health-thanks-to-pvd-treatment","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.cooperhealth.org\/ehealth\/2007\/07\/01\/walking-in-good-health-thanks-to-pvd-treatment\/","title":{"rendered":"Walking in Good Health Thanks to PVD Treatment"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-2481\" style=\"margin-left: 11px;margin-bottom: 7px\" title=\"2007_07_Walking_in_Good_Health\" src=\"http:\/\/ehealth.cooperhealth.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/10\/2007_07_Walking_in_Good_Health.jpg\" alt=\"Walking in Good Health Thanks to PVD Treatment\" width=\"206\" height=\"199\" \/>John Jacobsen is a relatively quiet man until you ask him about his love for walking.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ve been active all my life,\u201d said Mr. Jacobsen, a 71-year-old retiree from Mount Laurel. \u201cNo matter how hard I worked in a day, I always enjoyed my walks.\u201d That was, until peripheral vascular disease (PVD) in his legs began to rob him of this simple pleasure.<!--more-->\u201cI started having this sharp grabbing pain in my right leg whenever I walked even a short distance,\u201d Mr. Jacobsen says. \u201cIt got so bad I couldn\u2019t make it a half of a block before the pain became unbearable.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A visit to his primary care physician, Nancy Beggs, M.D., resulted in a call to Zoltan Turi, M.D., Director of the Cooper Vascular Center.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMr. Jacobsen had the classic story for a patient suffering from peripheral vascular disease,\u201d Dr. Turi says. His history included:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Heart disease (a previous heart attack and coronary artery bypass surgery)<\/li>\n<li>High blood pressure<\/li>\n<li>High cholesterol levels<\/li>\n<li>Smoking for many years<\/li>\n<li>Adult onset of diabetes<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Diagnostic testing, measurements of ankle-brachial indexes and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) confirmed the suspicion that Mr. Jacobsen had narrowing and blockages in the major blood vessels supplying circulation to his right leg. Treatment was needed, but initially Mr. Jacobsen was hesitant.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI didn\u2019t want any more surgery, so I was delighted to hear that the doctors could now open the blocked blood vessels in my leg without it,\u201d Mr. Jacobsen says.<\/p>\n<p>Peripheral angioplasty involves threading a catheter in through the groin and advancing it to the disease area. A balloon catheter is used to open the affected area, and a tiny, fine mesh stent is placed as a permanent scaffolding to keep the vessel open.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is a quick procedure with minimal discomfort and downtime,\u201d Dr. Turi says. \u201cPatients who have dealt with crippling leg pain for years are astounded at how quickly they return to the activities of daily living.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was back to walking in a short time,\u201d Mr. Jacobsen says, \u201cI\u2019m up to over a mile now.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Enjoying the warm weather, he says he is grateful to his Cooper doctors. \u201cThey gave me my life back.
