{"id":6057,"date":"2012-08-03T09:39:53","date_gmt":"2012-08-03T13:39:53","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/ehealth.cooperhealth.org\/?p=6057"},"modified":"2012-08-03T09:39:53","modified_gmt":"2012-08-03T13:39:53","slug":"doors-open-to-cooper-medical-school-of-rowan-university","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.cooperhealth.org\/ehealth\/2012\/08\/03\/doors-open-to-cooper-medical-school-of-rowan-university\/","title":{"rendered":"Cooper Medical School of Rowan University Opens Doors"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: left\">Business, political and community leaders from throughout New Jersey joined Governor Chris Christie on July 24th to celebrate the grand opening of Cooper Medical School of Rowan University&#8217;s state-of-the-art educational building on the corner of Broadway and Benson Street in downtown Camden\u2019s Cooper Health Sciences Campus.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cToday\u2019s grand opening of Cooper Medical School represents a significant step forward in higher education for the state of New Jersey,\u201d said Governor Chris Christie.\u00a0 \u201cThe establishment of a four-year medical school in Camden is long overdue, and I congratulate The Cooper Health System and Rowan University on this very successful collaboration.\u00a0 Children throughout New Jersey who dream of one day becoming a doctor now have another medical school option, right in their own state.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The first new medical school in New Jersey in over 35 years, Cooper Medical School of Rowan University is only the third MD-granting school in the state, and the only one based in South Jersey.\u00a0 The opening marked the completion of the school\u2019s building and planning phases, including the construction of the Medical Education Building and the development of its high tech\/high touch, mission-driven curriculum.\u00a0Cooper Medical School will begin training future doctors when its charter class arrives in August.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/ehealth.cooperhealth.org\/2012\/08\/doors-open-to-cooper-medical-school-of-rowan-university\/senate-president-steve-sweeneygeorge-e-norcross-lllsenator-donald-norcrossmayor-dana-reddrowan-university-president-ali-houshmandcooper-university-hospital-president-and-ceo-john-sheridan\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-6060\" title=\"Senate President Steve SweeneyGeorge E. Norcross lllSenator Donald NorcrossMayor Dana ReddRowan University President Ali HoushmandCooper University Hospital President and CEO John Sheridan\" src=\"http:\/\/ehealth.cooperhealth.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/08\/0802_CRMS_story.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"445\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is a historic day, especially for our two parent institutions, The Cooper Health System and Rowan University.\u00a0 I commend the leadership of both institutions, as well as the bi-partisan leadership throughout the state, for their fortitude in working toward a vision of improved educational opportunities, job creation and better health care for the residents of this region,\u201d said Paul Katz, MD, Dean of Cooper Medical School.\u00a0 \u201cOur building is complete and we\u2019ve earned preliminary accreditation from the LCME.\u00a0 But our most important work begins in August, when the 50 members of our charter class walk through these doors.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis vision set forth more than 30 years ago has now come to fruition.\u00a0 The medical school will have a dramatic, positive impact on our city, state and region by providing a steady stream of new, highly trained physicians who will deliver compassionate care to future generations,\u201d said George E. Norcross, III, Chairman of the Board of Trustees at Cooper.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cClearly, the medical school will have a great impact on the health and welfare of the region.\u00a0 It also will serve as a strong foundation upon which we will build other education programs, including the much-anticipated College of Health \u00a0Sciences in Camden,\u201d said Dr. Ali A. Houshmand, President of Rowan University. \u201cThis is a proud moment for everyone.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Cooper Medical School\u2019s charter class consists of 50 students, 74 percent of whom are New Jersey residents.\u00a0 Class size will eventually grow to 100 students, with 400 students in total. They will be trained by more than 450 clinical faculty from Cooper University Hospital, and the medical school\u2019s own team of esteemed biomedical faculty.<\/p>\n<p>Cooper Medical School\u2019s six-story, 200,000 square-foot building cost $139 million, and brought hundreds of jobs to the region.\u00a0 The Camden County Improvement Authority managed the project, which was designed by HDR Inc., with construction management by Joseph Jingoli &amp; Son, Inc.\u00a0 Developed specifically for the CMSRU curriculum, it is filled with spaces and technologies to support faculty and students in their educational process, including a spectacular, 250-seat auditorium where today\u2019s event was held.\u00a0 Other highlights include a 140-seat multipurpose room, 25 Active Learning Rooms, a Learning Commons and satellite medical library, a Clinical Simulation Center, and state-of-the-art laboratory and research space.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>More than 300 business, political and community leaders from throughout New Jersey joined Governor Chris Christie last week to celebrate the grand opening of Cooper Medical School of Rowan University&#8217;s state-of-the-art educational building on the corner of Broadway and Benson Street in downtown Camden\u2019s Cooper Health Sciences Campus.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":1,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[3,4],"tags":[],"class_list":{"0":"entry","1":"post","2":"publish","3":"author-admin","4":"has-excerpt","5":"post-6057","7":"format-standard","8":"category-ehealth-connection","9":"category-featured"},"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v26.5 -
