While 1 in 31 American women dies from breast cancer each year, 1 in 3 dies from heart disease. That\u2019s approximately one woman every minute!<\/p>\n<p>Another misperception is that heart disease is a \u201cman\u2019s disease.\u201d Not so. An estimated 44 million American women are affected by cardiovascular diseases, and 90 percent of women have one or more risk factors for heart disease or stroke \u2013 yet only 1 in 5 women believe that heart disease is her greatest health threat.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_8375\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-8375\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-8375\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.cooperhealth.org\/ehealth\/files\/2016\/12\/Screen-Shot-5-doctor-CardioGroup-300x181.png\" alt=\"Women's Heart Program Physicians\" width=\"300\" height=\"181\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.cooperhealth.org\/ehealth\/files\/2016\/12\/Screen-Shot-5-doctor-CardioGroup-300x181.png 300w, https:\/\/blogs.cooperhealth.org\/ehealth\/files\/2016\/12\/Screen-Shot-5-doctor-CardioGroup.png 372w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-8375\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">L-R: Kathleen M. Russo, MD.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>At the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cooperhealth.org\/departments-programs\/womens-heart-program\">Cooper Women\u2019s Heart Program<\/a> \u2013 one of the largest female cardiology groups in the Delaware Valley \u2013 we want to change these troubling statistics by empowering women with information about heart disease, especially what they can do to reduce their risks and take charge of their heart health.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFirst and foremost, women need to know they are at risk so they can take appropriate preventive steps,\u201d says <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cooperhealth.org\/physicians\/joanne-mazzarelli-md\">Joanne K. Mazzarelli, MD, FACC<\/a>, who is board-certified in cardiovascular disease, and internal medicine.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMany of these risk factors can be managed by adopting healthy habits,\u201d Dr. Mazzarelli notes. \u201cSometimes medication to manage blood pressure or cholesterol is appropriate. And sometimes medical or surgical intervention to address obesity or diabetes is indicated.<\/p>\n<p>We offer a spectrum of resources, depending on what risk factors a woman has,\u201d she adds.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBy taking preventive action, you can dramatically reduce your risk of\u00a0developing certain types of heart disease,\u201d says Dr. Mazzarelli, \u201cAnd the earlier you take action to keep your heart healthy, the better.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Making lifestyle changes early may affect your chances of having a heart attack or stroke later in life, adds <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cooperhealth.org\/physicians\/kathleen-m-heintz-do\">Kathleen M. Heintz, DO, FACC<\/a>, board certified\u00a0in cardiovascular disease.<\/p>\n<p>Resources available through Cooper\u2019s Women\u2019s Heart Program include nationally recognized expertise for treating valve disease, a cardio-oncology\u00a0program that treats patients with chemotherapy related\u00a0heart disease which can be seen in breast cancer patients, alternative\u00a0imaging modalities for women with symptoms that suggest cardiovascular\u00a0disease but who do not have\u00a0obvious blockages in their\u00a0coronary arteries.<\/p>\n<p>Cooper\u2019s Women\u2019s Heart\u00a0Program has many strengths\u00a0and the largest team of\u00a0cardiologists dedicated to\u00a0women&#8217;s heart health right\u00a0here in South Jersey,\u201d\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.cooperhealth.org\/physicians\/andrea-m-russo-md\">Andrea M. Russo, MD<\/a>, adds.<\/p>\n<h3>Women in Their 20s and 30s<\/h3>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-8378 alignleft\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.cooperhealth.org\/ehealth\/files\/2016\/12\/MomsHangingOut-300x199.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"199\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.cooperhealth.org\/ehealth\/files\/2016\/12\/MomsHangingOut-300x199.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blogs.cooperhealth.org\/ehealth\/files\/2016\/12\/MomsHangingOut.jpg 425w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>\u201cThis is when you need to focus on lifestyle,\u201d\u00a0says Dr. Mazzarelli. \u201cIf you smoke, quit before\u00a0too much damage is done. If you\u2019re sedentary,\u00a0get more active. Maintain a healthy weight and make smart dietary choices.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;This is when you need to focus on lifestyle,\u00a0weight and exercise\u201d says Dr. Mazzarelli.\u00a0Smoking, obesity, and a sedentary lifestyle are\u00a0becoming common among young women and\u00a0are major risk factors for atherosclerotic heart\u00a0disease and diabetes. Maintaining a healthy\u00a0weight and exercising several times a week\u00a0can substantially reduce the risk of developing\u00a0atherosclerotic heart disease later in life. Virtually any type of exercise is beneficial, with\u00a0as little as one hour a week providing benefit to the heart.<\/p>\n<p>Regular exercise, yoga or tai chi, and meditation\u00a0are good options to help. It\u2019s also\u00a0important to know that for younger women,\u00a0the combination of smoking and taking birth\u00a0control pills increases heart disease risk by 20 percent.<\/p>\n<p>These are a woman\u2019s childbearing\u00a0years, so her primary physician is\u00a0often her OB\/GYN. But it\u2019s also a\u00a0good time to establish a relationship\u00a0with an internist who will begin to monitor other heart-health markers like cholesterol\u00a0(the American Heart Association recommends\u00a0you start having your cholesterol checked at age 20 or earlier).<\/p>\n<h3>Women in Their 40s and 50s<\/h3>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-8380 alignright\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.cooperhealth.org\/ehealth\/files\/2016\/12\/woman_fitness-200x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"200\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.cooperhealth.org\/ehealth\/files\/2016\/12\/woman_fitness-200x300.jpg 200w, https:\/\/blogs.cooperhealth.org\/ehealth\/files\/2016\/12\/woman_fitness.jpg 283w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 200px) 100vw, 200px\" \/>\u201cWellness becomes paramount at midlife, and\u00a0many women at this stage of life need to learn\u00a0how to take care of themselves better\u00a0after a lifetime of putting others\u2019 needs first,\u201d says Dr. Heintz.<\/p>\n<p>These are the decades when\u00a0women start to experience the\u00a0hormonal shifts and metabolic\u00a0changes that signal\u00a0perimenopause and menopause.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is when we focus\u00a0more on risk factor modification,\u201d says\u00a0Dr. Heintz. \u201cAt this stage of life we often start to see weight gain and increases in blood\u00a0pressure, cholesterol, and blood sugar levels.\u00a0It\u2019s important to turn these around because it\u00a0gets even harder as you get older.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>This means taking ownership of these health risks \u2013 and it often means taking medication.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s also not too late to adopt what we\u00a0call \u2018primary prevention\u2019 measures like\u00a0exercising and eating right,\u201d says\u00a0Dr. Heintz, \u201calong with regular health screenings.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSymptoms in women can be very different\u00a0than in men,\u201d Dr. Heintz says.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhile we\u2019re conditioned to think the classic\u00a0sign of a heart attack is extreme chest pain,\u00a0women are more likely to experience shortness\u00a0of breath, nausea\/vomiting, and back or\u00a0jaw pain. Other symptoms women should be\u00a0aware of are dizziness, lightheadedness or fainting,\u00a0pain in the lower chest or upper abdomen,\u00a0upper back pain, and extreme fatigue.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Stressors like caring for aging parents can\u00a0trigger anxiety or depression, which can have\u00a0an impact on heart health. Mood swings\u00a0associated with hormonal changes can wreak\u00a0havoc with your emotional equilibrium. Sleep\u00a0issues can start to show a link between\u00a0too-little sleep and increased risk of heart disease.<\/p>\n<h3>Women in Their 60s and Beyond<\/h3>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-8377 alignleft\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.cooperhealth.org\/ehealth\/files\/2016\/12\/Yoga-200x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"200\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.cooperhealth.org\/ehealth\/files\/2016\/12\/Yoga-200x300.jpg 200w, https:\/\/blogs.cooperhealth.org\/ehealth\/files\/2016\/12\/Yoga.jpg 283w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 200px) 100vw, 200px\" \/>As women transition past menopause \u2013 and\u00a0lose the cardio-protective benefits of estrogen\u00a0\u2013 their incidence of heart disease begins to\u00a0match that of men. Atrial fibrillation (the most\u00a0common heart rhythm disorder, which increases\u00a0stroke risk), atherosclerosis (plaque buildup\u00a0that clogs the arteries) and high blood pressure become more common.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou can\u2019t think of yourself as low-risk anymore,\u201d says Andrea Russo, MD, director of\u00a0Cooper\u2019s Electrophysiology and Arrhythmia\u00a0Service, who is board-certified in cardiovascular disease and cardiac electrophysiology. \u201cWhile we still focus on modifying risk through healthy lifestyle choices, regular screenings,\u00a0and managing any health issues you may have, it\u2019s now more important than ever for women to recognize the symptoms of heart\u00a0disease and to take them seriously.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWomen may experience more frequent palpitations than men. Don\u2019t assume any of these symptoms are nothing,\u201d says Dr. Russo, \u201creport it to your doctor and seek medical attention; don\u2019t minimize it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cToday we have a powerful arsenal of medications and technologies to treat arrhythmias tailored specifically to women\u2019s needs,\u201d she adds.
