While women of all races and ethnic backgrounds need to take steps to keep themselves healthy and prevent against cancer, a close look at cancer incidence and death statistics show that certain groups in the United States suffer disproportionately from certain types of cancer.<\/p>\n

Important facts about breast and cervical cancer in African-American and Latino women.<\/p><\/div>\n

The National Cancer Institute (NCI) defines this phenomenon as “cancer health disparities” <\/em>and measures it by differences in the number of new cases diagnosed each year, the overall prevalence among certain populations, the total number of cancer deaths, differences in cancer survivorship rates, and burden of cancer or related health conditions that exist among different population groups.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n

One area of focus is breast cancer<\/a>. Studies have shown that the death rate due to breast\u00a0cancer in African-American\u00a0women is 39 percent higher than in\u00a0the general population of\u00a0Caucasian\u00a0women. Researchers have also discovered that aggressive breast tumors are\u00a0more common in younger African-American and Hispanic\/Latina\u00a0women. This more aggressive\u00a0form of breast cancer is less\u00a0responsive to standard cancer\u00a0treatments and is associated with higher death rates.<\/p>\n

These cancer health disparities are also found in cervical cancer<\/a>. Hispanic\/Latina women have the\u00a0highest cervical cancer incidence\u00a0rate. Likewise, African-American women are more\u00a0likely to be diagnosed with cervical\u00a0cancer than\u00a0Caucasian women in the\u00a0general population, and African-American women have the\u00a0highest death rate from cervical cancer.<\/p>\n

What we do know is that six out of every 10 cervical cancers\u00a0occur in women who have never\u00a0received a Pap test in the past five years.<\/p>\n

So what can be done to reduce these disparities? Education and screening<\/a>\u00a0are the keys to diagnosing cancer or precancerous conditions early when they are more treatable and, typically, have more favorable outcomes.<\/p>\n

All women who are 40 and older (or women\u00a0under 40 who have a family history,\u00a0breast abnormality, or concern) should\u00a0have a mammogram. Mammograms,\u00a0combined with a clinical breast exam,\u00a0are the best way to find breast cancer\u00a0early, when it is easier to treat.<\/p>\n

Similarly, women 21 and over should have an\u00a0annual Pap smear. A Pap test, combined\u00a0with a cervical exam, can find abnormal\u00a0cells which may turn into cancer. Pap\u00a0tests can also catch cervical cancer\u00a0early, when the chance of being cured is very high.<\/p>\n

Despite what is known about health disparities, by following these simple steps, women of all races and ethnic backgrounds can be proactive in their fight against cancer. Many low-cost screening options are available. Talk to your primary care doctor about specific concerns about your cancer risk.<\/p>\n
