Cooper University Health Care recently earned The Joint\u00a0Commission\u2019s Gold Seal of Approval\u00ae and the American Heart\u00a0Association\/American Stroke Association\u2019s Heart-Check mark\u00a0for Advanced Certification for Comprehensive Stroke Centers,\u00a0bringing the most advanced stroke care to South Jersey<\/a>. (Read press release<\/a>).<\/p>\n

The Gold Seal of Approval\u00ae and the Heart-Check mark represent\u00a0hospitals with the highest level of stroke care and are\u00a0symbols of quality from their respective organizations. With\u00a0this certification, Cooper joins an elite group of health care\u00a0organizations focused on highly specialized stroke care.<\/p>\n

\u201cAs the leading academic medical center in South Jersey,\u00a0our patients have come to rely upon Cooper to provide the\u00a0most advanced and highest quality health care. Receiving\u00a0designation as a Comprehensive Stroke Center is another\u00a0demonstration of the commitment to our patients and to\u00a0providing the highest level of care,\u201d said Adrienne Kirby, PhD,\u00a0FACHE<\/a>, Cooper\u2019s President and Chief Executive Officer.\u00a0\u201cWe are honored to be nationally recognized for the efforts of\u00a0our physicians, nurses, and support staff in providing the\u00a0highest level of stroke care to our patients.\u201d<\/p>\n

To be eligible, hospitals must demonstrate compliance with\u00a0stroke-related standards as a Primary Stroke Center and meet\u00a0additional requirements, including those related to advanced\u00a0imaging capabilities, availability of specialized treatments, and\u00a0providing staff with the unique education and competencies to\u00a0care for complex stroke patients.<\/p>\n

\u201cOur team went through a rigorous evaluation by The Joint\u00a0Commission, and we are proud of this certification that demonstrates\u00a0to our patients and their families that they are receiving the\u00a0most comprehensive stroke care at Cooper,\u201d said Hayan Dayoub,\u00a0MD<\/a>, Co-Director of the Neurointerventional Surgery Program<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The Comprehensive Stroke Center Difference<\/h3>\n

This designation recognized Cooper as the first hospital in South\u00a0Jersey equipped with the expertise and resources to deliver the\u00a0highest level of stroke care.<\/p>\n

The elements of a comprehensive stroke center program\u00a0include a team of stroke specialists available 24 hours a day,\u00a0endovascular neurosurgery, inpatient neurointensive care,\u00a0remote telestroke capabilities, and immediate transfers from\u00a0community hospitals.<\/p>\n

\u201cThroughout South Jersey, you can find a number of acute,\u00a0stroke-ready hospitals,\u201d says Tapan R. Kavi, MD<\/a>, Neurointensivist.\u00a0\u201cThese hospitals can stabilize a patient with stroke and treat\u00a0them with the clot-busting medication tPA. Often after this\u00a0medication is administered, these hospitals have to transfer\u00a0patients to a Primary or Comprehensive Stroke Center.\u201d<\/p>\n

The Joint Commission recognizes two levels of advanced stroke\u00a0care \u2013 Primary and Comprehensive. Primary Stroke Centers\u00a0can administer the clot-busting medication to patients, but\u00a0unlike acute stroke-ready hospitals, once the medication is\u00a0administered, a Primary Center can admit these patients and\u00a0monitor their progress.<\/p>\n

Comprehensive Stroke Centers take stroke care to another\u00a0level. They can handle the most complex stroke patients and\u00a0provide the most advanced care available.<\/p>\n

The needs of a complex stroke patient can vary, but generally\u00a0those patients require additional interventional care following\u00a0any clot-busting medications. They may need endovascular\u00a0procedures to remove a clot or to secure an intracranial\u00a0aneurysm. They often require hospitalization in specialized\u00a0neuro-critical intensive care units and access to emergent\u00a0neurosurgical evaluation and treatment.<\/p>\n

\u201cA Comprehensive Center has to provide these services 24\u00a0hours a day, 365 days a year,\u201d says Hamza A. Shaikh, MD<\/a>,\u00a0Co-Director of the Neurointerventional Surgery Program. \u201cAdditionally, we have to constantly evaluate our clinical \u00a0outcomes and hold ourselves and our team members accountable\u00a0for providing quality care to each of our patients.\u201d<\/p>\n

This type of monitoring includes individualized follow-up\u00a0care plans in an outpatient setting. \u201cWe review our patients\u2019\u00a0progress at 90 days post-discharge,\u201d Dr. Shaikh says. \u201cWe assess\u00a0their clinical outcomes and readjust their care plans as needed.\u00a0We want to make sure we\u2019re doing the right thing.\u201d<\/p>\n

Time Is Brain<\/h3>\n

It is important to understand that there are different types\u00a0of hospitals, each equipped for different levels of care. For the\u00a0stroke patient, a Comprehensive Center can make a life-saving\u00a0difference: time lost is brain lost. According to the American\u00a0Heart Association\/American Stroke Association, an estimated two million brain cells die each minute during a stroke.<\/p>\n

\u201c\u2018Time is Brain\u2019 has become a common expression when\u00a0educating patients and caregivers about stroke,\u201d says Ryna K.\u00a0Then, MD<\/a>, Inpatient Stroke Director at Cooper Neurological\u00a0Institute<\/a>. \u201cWhat it actually means is this \u2013 if you\u2019re having a\u00a0stroke, you need to get expert care fast.\u201d<\/p>\n

When it comes to stroke care, getting to the right hospital\u00a0the first time is extremely important. Immediate access to\u00a0the appropriate level of care can make a huge difference in a\u00a0person\u2019s ability to survive and have the best outcomes possible.\u00a0A transfer from an acute stroke-ready hospital to a Primary or\u00a0Comprehensive Center takes valuable time.<\/p>\n

Dr. Then adds, \u201cThe reality is that stroke is a life-or-death\u00a0situation. If you or a loved one is having a stroke, time is of the\u00a0essence and where you get your first level of care is critical.\u201d<\/p>\n
