For adults, weight loss and quitting smoking rank the highest on most lists.\u00a0 There are even appropriate resolutions for children. This may be a good time to start your child on a resolution or two which can encourage healthy habits that will last them a lifetime.<\/p>\n<p>The Children\u2019s Regional Hospital, with the American Academy of Pediatrics, is happy to provide you with this list that will give you some age-appropriate ideas to discuss your children.<!--more--><\/p>\n<h2>Preschoolers<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>I will clean up my toys.<\/li>\n<li>I will brush my teeth twice a day, and wash my hands after going to the bathroom and before eating.<\/li>\n<li>I won\u2019t tease dogs \u2013 even friendly ones. I will avoid being bitten by keeping my fingers and face away from their mouths.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Kids 5- to 12-years-old<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>I will drink milk and water, and limit soda and fruit drinks.<\/li>\n<li>I will apply sunscreen before I go outdoors.\u00a0 I will try to stay in the shade whenever possible and wear a hat and sunglasses, especially when I\u2019m playing sports.<\/li>\n<li>I will try to find a sport (like basketball or soccer) or an activity (like playing tag, jumping rope, dancing or riding my bike) that I like and do it at least three times a week!<\/li>\n<li>I will always wear a helmet when bicycling.<\/li>\n<li>I will wear my seat belt every time I get in a car.\u00a0 I\u2019ll sit in the back seat and use a booster seat until I am tall enough to use a lap\/shoulder seat belt.<\/li>\n<li>I\u2019ll be nice to other kids. I\u2019ll be friendly to kids who need friends \u2013 like someone who is shy, or is new to my school<\/li>\n<li>I\u2019ll never give out personal information such as my name, home address, school name or telephone number on the Internet.\u00a0 Also, I\u2019ll never send a picture of myself to someone I chat with on the computer without my parent\u2019s permission.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Kids 13-years-old and up<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>I will eat at least one fruit and one vegetable every day, and I will limit the amount of soda I drink.<\/li>\n<li>I will take care of my body through physical activity and nutrition.<\/li>\n<li>I will choose non-violent television shows and video games, and I will spend only one to two hours each day \u2013 at the most \u2013 on these activities.<\/li>\n<li>I will help out in my community \u2013 through volunteering, working with community groups or by joining a group that helps people in need.<\/li>\n<li>I will wipe negative \u201cself talk\u201d (i.e. \u201cI can\u2019t do it\u201d or \u201cI\u2019m so dumb\u201d) out of my vocabulary,<\/li>\n<li>When I feel angry or stressed out, I will take a break and find constructive ways to deal with the stress, such as exercising, reading, writing in a journal or discussing my problem with a parent or friend.<\/li>\n<li>When faced with a difficult decision, I will talk with an adult about my choices.<\/li>\n<li>When I notice my friends are struggling or engaging in risky behaviors, I will talk with a trusted adult and attempt to find a way that I can help them.<\/li>\n<li>I will be careful about whom I choose to date, and always treat the other person with respect and without coercion or violence.<\/li>\n<li>I will resist peer pressure to try drugs and alcohol.<\/li>\n<li>I agree not to use a cell phone or text message while driving and to always use a seat belt.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>\u2018Tis the season for New Year\u2019s Resolutions.
