Thomas Eakins and the World’s Fairs\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

Thomas Eakins\u2019 two medical masterpieces, The Gross Clinic<\/em> and The Agnew Clinic<\/em> were both displayed at the 1893 World\u2019s Columbian Exposition. This lecture series with Dr. Paul Sivitiz<\/strong> examines Eakins\u2019 use of a long-standing genre which he \u201cmodernized\u201d (and the reason why The Gross Clinic<\/em> was so off-putting to viewers at the 1876 World\u2019s Fair). We will also explore if Eakins\u2019 participation (essentially virtual, of course) in the Chicago World\u2019s Fair contributed to the racial inequality promoted by the fair\u2019s organizers.<\/p>\n

Week 1: Medical Art and the Gross Clinic<\/strong><\/p>\n

The Gross Clinic<\/em> was part of a tradition of medical painting and illustration dating back several hundred years. This lecture explores how Thomas Eakins not only continued in that tradition, but also expanded its possibilities.<\/p>\n

Week 2: Modernism and Eakin\u2019s Clinic Paintings<\/strong><\/p>\n

The Gross Clinic<\/em> was originally scheduled to be displayed at the 1876 World\u2019s Fair in Philadelphia, but it was likely Eakins\u2019 \u201cmodern\u201d approach to his subject that scrapped the plan. A generation later, The Gross Clinic<\/em> and The Agnew Clinic<\/em> were displayed at The World\u2019s Columbian Exposition (aka The Chicago World\u2019s Fair) in 1893. Why?<\/p>\n

Week 3: Eakins and the World\u2019s Fairs<\/strong><\/p>\n

World\u2019s Fairs in America during the late-nineteenth and early-twentieth centuries could best be described as \u201cedutainment.\u201d Fair organizers overtly promoted racial inequality, and the Eakins Clinic<\/em> paintings helped undergird this strategy.<\/p>\n
