{"id":740,"date":"2022-03-16T20:04:31","date_gmt":"2022-03-16T20:04:31","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.cooperhealth.org\/lifeatthecoop\/?p=740"},"modified":"2022-03-16T20:04:31","modified_gmt":"2022-03-16T20:04:31","slug":"wellness-wednesday-post-traumatic-growth","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.cooperhealth.org\/lifeatthecoop\/2022\/03\/16\/wellness-wednesday-post-traumatic-growth\/","title":{"rendered":"Wellness Wednesday: Post Traumatic Growth"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Dear colleagues,<\/p>\n<p>Many use this week as an a two year anniversary marker for COVID-19 but there is certainly no shortage of things to be worried about in the world.\u00a0Like other anniversary markers, it is an opportunity to reflect, take stock, and think about the future.<\/p>\n<p>While we are all familiar with Post Traumatic Stress Syndrome, generally defined as \u201cA disorder in which a person has difficulty recovering after experiencing or witnessing a terrifying event,\u201d we may not know about Post Traumatic Growth.\u00a0Developed in the 1990s by psychologists Richard Tedeschi, PhD, and Lawrence Calhoun, PhD, the theory of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/r20.rs6.net\/tn.jsp?f=001A0Ub1JPYuELDa00PM9sQ2Asf7c529BecTxVKC8sKn4rxw4y0jL8pw1NoEKi1gBwSJVnu7uWe3t8nFZCDZWjLMdlhZ8UZwRSyMuUePIAAyUZisuDduBSqpfqV0N9R3Q8RVQGkFxWChNASp3wtUSqZE1d9qzMY3La-qAc1Zu_zoZbyPVVVzLyFNx_UfoV_HaR7&amp;c=k0nab6KZa8ttRX8qEKvcktAn6ZMCO5qjLdkZEfh78UGCiGnb7bYo6w==&amp;ch=hjSDYAAM6AvyNUobBnAgxiISf1RA6fSnonmRmNYOqivFxRZURsbhHw==\">post-traumatic growth<\/a>\u00a0suggests that people can emerge from trauma or adversity having achieved positive personal growth.<\/p>\n<p>Tedeschi and Calhoun\u2019s Post\u00adtraumatic Growth Inventory (PTGI) (<a href=\"https:\/\/r20.rs6.net\/tn.jsp?f=001A0Ub1JPYuELDa00PM9sQ2Asf7c529BecTxVKC8sKn4rxw4y0jL8pw1NoEKi1gBwSpeDastxEIv5DOAfs43Q0f8QzKiB6Ok3s-2vFSF_zjzNJrgPIXfChV55RlI9EYIBywUqp9P28A75zIEmiW98cHsou26HdIY9CAF5dRLv11W3O5LK4LTs5fQ0JOB-oks3j&amp;c=k0nab6KZa8ttRX8qEKvcktAn6ZMCO5qjLdkZEfh78UGCiGnb7bYo6w==&amp;ch=hjSDYAAM6AvyNUobBnAgxiISf1RA6fSnonmRmNYOqivFxRZURsbhHw==\"><em>Journal of Traumatic Stress<\/em><\/a>, Vol. 9, No. 3, 1996),\u00a0evaluates growth in five areas: appreciation of life, relating to others, personal strength, recognizing new possibilities and spiritual change. It\u2019s not necessary or even typical to show change in all five areas, Tedeschi says. But growth in even one or two of those realms \u201ccan have a profound effect on a person\u2019s life.\u201d\u00a0(Kristen Weir, American Psychological Association, Vol. 51 No. 4)<\/p>\n<p>Whether you use Tedeschi\u2019s model or some other questions, this two-year anniversary of COVID is not a bad time to reflect.\u00a0How has it impacted you?\u00a0What have you lost?
