We are pleased to announce that for the third year in a row, The Society of Thoracic Surgeons has recognized the Cooper cardiac surgery program for outstanding performance. Cooper is among the top 13 percent in the nation for overall performance.
The “Three Star” rating that Cooper received places it in the highest quality tier of The Society of Thoracic Surgeons comprehensive rating system. This system compares the quality of cardiac surgery among hospitals across the country. All aspects of quality care in cardiothoracic surgery were measured including compliance with recommended quality measures during surgery, adherence to appropriate medication usage before and after surgery, and patient outcomes.
“This is an outstanding achievement that could not have been accomplished without the team approach to care that we take with each patient,” said Michael Rosenbloom, M.D., Head, Division of Cardiothoracic Surgery.
In addition, more than 90% percent of coronary artery bypass surgery at Cooper was performed off-pump in 2010, which means that the patients’ hearts were not stopped or placed on a heart-lung machine. This approach is much better for the patient. Nationally, only 21 percent of patients undergoing coronary bypass surgery have their procedures performed without the use of the heart-lung machine. These are statistics that reflect the superior level of expertise we have at Cooper.
Congratulations to the entire Cooper Heart Surgery team for their outstanding dedication to patient care.
