CAMDEN, N.J.— The Cooper Foundation of Cooper University Hospital along with Ponzio’s Diner-Bakery-Bar today announced that the Cooper Cookie will go on sale at Ponzio’s in Cherry Hill, N.J., starting on Friday, June 22.

Proceeds from Cooper Cookie sales will benefit the Jim Fifis Lung Cancer Research Fund at Cooper, established in memory of the late Jim Fifis. Fifis was the long-time owner of Ponzio’s before he died in 2007 of lung cancer.

“The Cooper Cookie was such a popular treat last year that we decided to bring it back again this year,” said Susan Bass Levin, president and CEO of the Cooper Foundation. “The cookie provides people with an easy way to give to a good cause – and it tastes great.”

The cookie costs $5 and will be on sale at Ponzio’s through October. It will also be available in Ravitz ShopRite stores.

“We’re known for our cookies at Ponzio’s, so this seems to be a good way to pay tribute to our dad and raise awareness about lung cancer,” said Nick Fifis, the youngest of three sons. “My family is grateful to the team at Cooper Cancer Institute for its commitment to fighting lung cancer and to educating young people about the dangers of smoking.”

Lung cancer is the deadliest type of cancer in both men and women, and approximately 1 in 13 men and 1 in 16 women will get lung cancer in their lifetime. While cigarette smoking is the leading cause of lung cancer, up to 15 percent of lung cancer patients have never smoked. Exposure to high levels of cancer causing chemicals, radon gas, asbestos and radiation can also increase your risk.

In addition to selling Cooper Cookies, the Fifis family and the Cooper Foundation will hold its second annual Jim Fifis Lung Cancer Research Fund dinner on Tuesday, Oct. 2. Tickets are $125 each and are available by visiting cooperhealth.org/foundation or calling (856) 963-6704. Sponsorships are also available.
