MD Anderson Cancer Center at Cooper Opens New Free-Standing Cancer Building in Camden, New Jersey

Today, MD Anderson Cancer Center at Cooper celebrates the grand opening of its new $100 million, four-story, 103,050 sq. ft. center located on the Cooper Health Sciences Campus in Camden, dedicated to cancer prevention, detection, treatment and research.

“Our vision to bring the best possible cancer care to the region takes another step forward with the opening of this remarkable building,” said George E. Norcross, III, Chairman of the Board, The Cooper Health System. “This building is the cornerstone of our new partnership with MD Anderson Cancer Center and, together, we bring renewed hope to cancer patients across the region.”

Physicians from various disciplines including medical oncology, radiation oncology, surgical oncology, gynecologic oncology and urology will conduct concurrent, complementary clinical sessions, fostering professional interaction and collaboration. Patients will have the benefit of easy access to advanced treatment technologies, groundbreaking clinical trials and a full range of supportive care services all in one location.

MD Anderson Cancer Center at Cooper also offers South Jersey’s only dedicated inpatient, 30-bed cancer unit adjacent to the new cancer center at Cooper University Hospital.

“This facility shows our commitment to providing compassionate and effective care to every patient who walks through our doors,” said Thomas Burke, M.D., MD Anderson’s Executive Vice President and Physician-in-Chief. “Patients across the region will experience MD Anderson’s signature, multidisciplinary approach to care in a state-of-the-art setting close to home.”

The center includes bright, spacious chemotherapy treatment areas, patient exams rooms, conference centers and advanced diagnostic and treatment technologies. The designers incorporated an aesthetic approach to healing with abundant natural light, a rooftop Tranquility Garden, an illuminated floor-to-ceiling “Tree of Life” centerpiece and more than 100 pieces of original art created by 71 New Jersey artists.

In addition to the opening of the new cancer center in Camden, Cooper is expanding cancer services at MD Anderson Cancer Center at Cooper – Voorhees, with the addition of a second linear accelerator and the installation of a permanent PET/CT scanner.

Francis Cauffman of Philadelphia designed the MD Anderson Cancer Center at Cooper building and P. Agnes was the contractor for the 18-month project. The building was finished within budget and opened on-time. The building is on track to receive a LEED environmental Silver rating.
