Stephen W. Trzeciak, MD, MPH, has been selected to receive The Philadelphia Inquirer’s 2019 Influencer of Healthcare Award. This award program honors Philadelphia’s most influential health care professionals. Dr. Trzeciak is one of 27 awardees who will be honored at a ceremony, as well as profiled in a special section of the Sunday Inquirer.

Dr. Trzeciak is a physician scientist, professor and chair of medicine at Cooper Medical School of Rowan University (CMSRU), and the chief of medicine at Cooper University Health Care. He is a practicing intensivist (specialist in intensive care medicine), and a National Institutes of Health-funded clinical researcher with more than 100 publications in scientific literature. Dr. Trzeciak’s work has been featured in prestigious medical journals, such as Journal of the American Medical Association, Circulation, and The New England Journal of Medicine. His research has been supported by grants from the National Institute of General Medical Sciences and the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute, with Dr. Trzeciak serving in the role of principal investigator.

Currently, Dr. Trzeciak’s scientific program is focused on a new field called “Compassionomics,” and he leads a team of Cooper researchers studying the effects of compassion on patients, patient care (including the quality and costs of care), and those who care for patients. Their overarching hypothesis is that the provision of health care with compassion is more effective than health care without compassion, because human connection can confer distinct and measurable benefits. Dr. Trzeciak and Anthony J. Mazzarelli, MD, JD, MBE, co-president/CEO of Cooper, are the authors of a new book titled “Compassionomics: The Revolutionary Scientific Evidence That Caring Makes a Difference.” Broadly, Dr. Trzeciak’s mission is to make health care more compassionate through science.

“I am very grateful for this award, and I thank my colleagues and collaborators at Cooper and CMSRU for making this work possible,” said Dr. Trzeciak.

The awards ceremony will take place on Thursday, August 15, 2019, in Philadelphia, PA.
