Carman Ciervo, DO, has been named chief physician executive of Cooper Care Alliance (CCA), Cooper University Health Care’s community-based physician group.

Formed in 2020, CCA, a community-based physician group, is the health system’s second physician group along with the 800-member Cooper University Physicians (CUP) group, South Jersey’s largest physician group. CCA physicians are community-based and will focus on innovative strategies in primary care delivery.

“We are delighted Dr. Ciervo is among the first group of physicians to join the Cooper Care Alliance and has now agreed to lead this growing physician group,” said Anthony Mazzarelli, MD, JD, MBE, co-CEO of Cooper.

In this new role, Dr. Ciervo will lead initiatives to integrate the Cooper Care Alliance practices into the larger mission of Cooper University Health Care. He will lead the group, which currently has 22 physicians and nine advanced practice providers, to focus on working to expand CCA’s services, develop cutting-edge systems of care, collaborate on digital strategies to enhance patient experience, and support physician leadership development.

“Dr. Ciervo is one of the most well-known physicians in the region, and we are very fortunate that he has joined the Cooper team. We look forward to Dr. Ciervo’s leadership of Cooper Care Alliance, which will continue expand to meet the primary care needs of the southern New Jersey region,” added Kevin O’Dowd, JD, co-CEO of Cooper.

Prior to joining the Cooper team, Dr. Ciervo developed a strong reputation in our region as an outstanding clinician, an accomplished academician and innovative leader. He has served in roles such as residency program director at SOM-UMDNJ and subsequently the chair of Family and Community Medicine. In 2010, he joined the leadership team of Kennedy Health System, ultimately assuming the role of chief physician executive. In 2011, he led a medical staff redevelopment plan that established the Kennedy Health Alliance and has substantial experience in promoting quality, patient experience and growth.

“Dr. Ciervo brings deep experiential knowledge, innovative approach to health care delivery and his focus on quality and experience that bring an exciting new arm to Cooper’s mission to serve the South Jersey community,” said Eric Kupersmith, MD, SFHM, chief physician executive at Cooper.
