Cooper University Health Care Cardiologist Named to the American Board of Internal Medicine Cardiovascular Specialty Board

Andrea M. Russo, MD, FACC, FHRS, FAHA, a cardiologist and director of the electrophysiology and arrhythmia service at Cooper University Health Care and professor of medicine at Cooper Medical School of Rowan University, was appointed to the American Board of Internal Medicine (ABIM) Cardiovascular Specialty Board.

“We congratulate Dr. Russo, who is a compassionate, skilled physician and researcher, providing her patients and their families the highest level of care while making a lasting contribution in the field of cardiology,” said Anthony J. Mazzarelli, MD, JD, MBE, co-CEO of Cooper.

The ABIM has 12 Specialty Boards composed of physicians from a diverse range of practice types as well as members of the inter-professional health care team and public who provide important perspectives on what constitutes excellence in patient care. Specialty Board members work with physicians and medical societies to develop certification and maintenance of certification credentials to recognize physicians for their specialized knowledge and commitment to staying current in their field.

“We are very proud to have a nationally recognized specialist like Dr. Russo on the Cooper team.  Dr. Russo is not only making a difference in the lives of patients in South Jersey and the region, but she is also influencing the practice of medicine on a national level,” said Kevin O’Dowd, JD, co-CEO of Cooper.

From 2019 to 2020, Dr. Russo served as president of the Heart Rhythm Society, an international society of electrophysiologists with more than 10,000 members. She received her medical degree from SUNY Upstate Medical Center in Syracuse, New York, and did her residency at the Medical College of Pennsylvania and her fellowship training in cardiology and electrophysiology at Cooper University Hospital.

In 2018, Cooper and Inspira Health Network formed a joint venture to integrate cardiac services in the region. This affiliation, called Cardiac Partners at Cooper and Inspira, provides patients in the southern New Jersey with access to more coordinated cardiac services across the continuum of care. As a leading academic health system and the only Level 1 Trauma Center serving all of southern New Jersey, Cooper provides the most comprehensive, advanced cardiac care and has earned national recognition for its superior quality and team of cardiovascular experts.
