Cooper University Health Care Named Among Top 5% of Hospitals in the U.S. for Patient Safety by Healthgrades for Fourth Consecutive Year

Cooper University Health Care has been the recipient of the Healthgrades Patient Safety Excellence Award for four consecutive years.

Cooper University Health Care today announced that it has been recognized by Healthgrades as a 2022 Patient Safety Excellence Award™ recipient. This distinction places Cooper among the top 5% of all short-term acute care hospitals as evaluated by Healthgrades, the leading marketplace connecting patients and providers. Cooper has received the Healthgrades Patient Safety Excellence Award for four consecutive years (2019-2022) and is the only hospital in South Jersey to achieve the award in 2022.

“Everyone at Cooper is enormously proud that we were the only hospital in South Jersey to receive the 2022 Healthgrades Patient Safety Excellence Award, ensuring that Cooper stands out among its peers for its commitment to excellence and safety,” George E. Norcross III, Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Cooper Health System, Cooper University Hospital, and MD Anderson Cancer Center at Cooper said today. “This recognition is a tribute to the incredible work everyone at Cooper does to put patient safety first as we provide care that is among the best in the greater Philadelphia region.”

“Our team is laser-focused on providing the safest level of care, and this achievement – for four straight years – is a reflection of their skill, compassion, and dedication to patient care,” said Anthony J. Mazzarelli, MD, JD, MBE, co-CEO of Cooper.

Healthgrades found that patients treated in hospitals receiving the Healthgrades 2022 Patient Safety Excellence Award™ were, on average:

  • 8% less likely to experience an in-hospital fall resulting in hip fracture, than patients treated at non-recipient hospitals*
  • 6% less likely to experience a collapsed lung resulting from a procedure or surgery in or around the chest, than patients treated at non-recipient hospitals*
  • 2% less likely to experience pressure sores or bed sores acquired in the hospital, than patients treated at non-recipient hospitals*
  • 8% less likely to experience catheter-related bloodstream infections acquired in the hospital, than patients treated at non-recipient hospitals*

“It is with great pride that the Cooper team receives yet another national recognition for clinical excellence. Being ranked by Healthgrades as one of the top hospitals in the country for providing safe, high-quality care reflects the dedication and commitment of all Cooper team members,” said Kevin O’Dowd, JD, co-CEO of Cooper.

“Through our 2022 Patient Safety Excellence Awards, we seek to recognize hospitals that excel in providing top-quality care for their patients while preventing serious injuries during hospital stays,” said Brad Bowman, MD, Chief Medical Officer and head of Data Science, Healthgrades. “We are proud to name Cooper University Hospital as a 2022 Patient Safety Excellence Award recipient and look forward to their continued efforts to make patient safety a priority.”
