Davis<\/p><\/div>\n<p>During Black History Month, Cooper is reflecting on the legacy of our past and present changemakers. This week, we\u2019re highlighting the legacy of Joan Davis, who served on Cooper\u2019s Board of Trustees.<\/p>\n<p>Today, Cooper\u2019s Board of Trustees continues to\u00a0<span class=\"text_exposed_show\">comprise a committed group of community and professional leaders who have been entrusted with the major public responsibility and authority to preserve the mission and vision of Cooper. Serving on our Board is Phoebe A. Haddon, JD, Chancellor of\u00a0Rutgers University\u2014Camden, whose commitment to service includes her writing on equality and access in education as well as on matters related to access to counsel for civil litigants.<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"text_exposed_show\">\n<p>\u201cWhile I never had the honor of meeting Joan Davis, I look up to her. She built a strong legacy of community service and remains a model of selfless dedication and one of Camden\u2019s brightest stars.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>We are thankful for the lessons of Mrs. Davis\u2019s legacy in Camden and at Cooper, and for the opportunities to continue in her footsteps.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<\/div>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cI always believed in serving the community, and my service on the Cooper Board of Trustees is an\u00a0extension of that belief. Cooper has undergone a significant transformation over the past several years,\u00a0with the opening of the new medical school and the construction of the new cancer institute, and the future looks bright. I am proud to have the opportunity to be a part of it.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Joan S. Davis spoke these words on June 6, 2013, the last public speech she ever gave. Wearing a suit\u00a0that matched the colorful bouquet of flowers she held in her arms, Mrs. Davis was the guest of honor\u00a0that day, surrounded by more than fifty community leaders who had gathered to dedicate Camden\u2019s\u00a0Seventh Street Park to her in honor of her longtime civic and community leadership. Nearly three weeks\u00a0later, after a courageous three-year battle with lung cancer, she passed away on June 29 at the age of seventy-five.<\/p>\n<p>A former educator and financial analyst, Mrs. Davis created a lasting legacy as a tireless community\u00a0advocate and leader in Camden, a lifetime of service described on a beautiful plaque in the park that\u00a0now bears her name. She held leadership positions at the Camden Public Library, CAMcare Health\u00a0Corporation, Delaware River Port Authority, Home Port Alliance for the USS New Jersey, Cooper\u2019s Ferry Development Corporation, and the Camden Redevelopment Agency. She served on Cooper\u2019s Board of\u00a0Trustees since 1994 and was the first woman to become Vice Chair, serving in that position from 2006 until she passed away.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cJoan was my partner throughout my leadership tenure at Cooper,\u201d said Norcross [George E. Norcross III, current Chairman of the Cooper Board of Trustees]. \u201cShe believed\u00a0passionately in the mission of Cooper, and she lived in the city until her passing. She was an anchor\u2014not only for Cooper and our Board of Trustees but for an entire city.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>At Mrs. Davis\u2019s memorial service, Norcross read the statements that Mrs. Davis had prepared\u00a0to deliver on June 10, 2013, the day Cooper and MD Anderson Cancer Center publicly announced\u00a0their partnership for a new cancer center. Her declining health, just\u00a0three days after she attended the park dedication, prevented her\u00a0from speaking at that press conference, but her poignant, inspiring,\u00a0and selfless words will forever remain a powerful reminder of why MD Anderson Cancer Center at Cooper is so important.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn July 2010, I was diagnosed with lung cancer. I am the eighth\u00a0person in my family diagnosed with cancer,\u201d she wrote. \u201cOther\u00a0members of my family did not have the opportunity to live as long\u00a0as I have. I have received the best care at Cooper, and it\u2019s the same\u00a0care they provide the man or woman battling their own cancer in\u00a0the chemo chair beside me. To me and to cancer patients throughout\u00a0the region, this new partnership brings promise. I believe that this\u00a0partnership will give families, like mine, more time, more memories, and\u00a0more hope.\u201d<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p>During Black History Month, Cooper is reflecting on the legacy of our past and present changemakers. These are the people and the moments that have shaped Cooper, impacting the way we serve, heal, and educate today and tomorrow.
