Recently MD Anderson Cancer Center at Cooper received the essential components of the new MR Linac device \u2013 a state-of-the-art image-guided radiation treatment delivery system, which will be housed at our location on 715 Fellowship Road. MD Anderson at Cooper will be the first cancer center in the Philadelphia \u2013 South Jersey region to treat patients using this new technology this fall.<\/p><\/div>\n

MD Anderson Cancer Center at Cooper<\/a> has taken the lead in bringing next-generation radiation treatment technology to the fight against cancer<\/a> for our patients, announced Generosa Grana, MD<\/a>, director of MD Anderson Cancer Center at Cooper.<\/p>\n

MD Anderson Cancer Center at Cooper recently received delivery of the key components of its new MR Linac \u2013 and will begin treating patients with this advanced technology in fall 2020 at its location in Mount Laurel.<\/p>\n

The MR Linac is an MR image guided radiation treatment delivery system. This new technology merges a magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) machine with a linear accelerator (a tool used to deliver radiation treatment) into one device. The MR Linac gives our radiation oncology the MD Anderson at Cooper team the ability to see a tumor, track its movement, and deliver radiation therapy more precisely than ever before.<\/p>\n

\u201cHalf of all cancer patients receive radiation therapy as part of their treatment,\u201d said Anthony Dragun, MD<\/a>, Chief of the Department of Radiation Oncology at MD Anderson at Cooper. \u201cThe goal is to deliver the proper dosage of radiation needed to destroy the tumor, without harming surrounding, healthy tissue.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cTumors can shift as patients inhale and exhale during radiation treatment. But MR-guided radiation treatment allows our team to use real-time images to keep the radiation beam precisely locked on the tumor, even as it moves, making radiation treatment safer and more precise and effective for our patients than ever before\u201d he explained.<\/p>\n

\u201cOur partner, MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston was one of the original seven institutions that made up the consortium that helped lead the way in developing this innovative technology,\u201d said Dr. Grana. \u201cMD Anderson was also the first clinical site in the world to install the MR Linac, other than the University Medical Center in Utrecht, the Netherlands, where it was designed.\u201d<\/p>\n
