{"id":11334,"date":"2020-10-27T13:31:58","date_gmt":"2020-10-27T17:31:58","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.cooperhealth.org\/news\/?p=11334"},"modified":"2020-11-11T21:29:51","modified_gmt":"2020-11-12T02:29:51","slug":"clinical-research-shows-that-cancer-treatment-can-be-done-safely-during-the-covid-19-pandemic","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.cooperhealth.org\/news\/2020\/10\/clinical-research-shows-that-cancer-treatment-can-be-done-safely-during-the-covid-19-pandemic\/","title":{"rendered":"Clinical Research Shows That Cancer Treatment Can Be Done Safely During the Covid-19 Pandemic"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.cooperhealth.org\/news\/2020\/10\/clinical-research-shows-that-cancer-treatment-can-be-done-safely-during-the-covid-19-pandemic\/#espanol\">Para leer en Espa\u00f1ol, por favor haga clic aqu\u00ed<\/a> <\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Study conducted by MD Anderson Cancer Center at Cooper and Rutgers Cancer Institute of New Jersey researchers finds very low risk of asymptomatic cases in statewide study of cancer patients.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In the largest study of its kind reported to date, a multi-institutional group of researchers examined the presence of asymptomatic COVID-19 in cancer patients.\u00a0 The study was conducted in the New Jersey and Southeast Pennsylvania region and included patients from two academic medical centers (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.cooperhealth.org\">Cooper University Hospital<\/a> and Rutgers Cancer Institute of New Jersey), as well as two community hospitals (Holy Redeemer Hospital, Meadowbrook, PA and Trinitas Health System in Elizabeth, NJ).<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_7855\" style=\"width: 198px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-7855\" class=\"size-full wp-image-7855\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.cooperhealth.org\/news\/files\/2017\/06\/Dragun20-20Lab20coat20-20smiling.jpg\" alt=\"Anthony Dragun, MD\" width=\"188\" height=\"260\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-7855\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Anthony Dragun, MD<\/p><\/div>\n<p>The analysis focused on patients who underwent radiation therapy between April and August of 2020, including the peak community prevalence of COVID-19 in many of the region\u2019s counties.\u00a0 The results of the three-month study were presented today (October 27) at the Annual Meeting of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.astro.org\/\">American Society of Radiation Oncology<\/a> by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cooperhealth.org\/doctors\/anthony-dragun-md\">Anthony E. Dragun, MD<\/a>, Chief of the Department of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cooperhealth.org\/services\/radiation-oncology\">Radiation Oncology at MD Anderson Cancer Center at Cooper<\/a>, and Professor and Chair of Radiation Oncology at Cooper Medical School of Rowan University (CMSRU).<\/p>\n<p>Cancer patients scheduled for radiation therapy with no influenza-like symptoms underwent swab polymerase chain reaction (PCR) testing for COVID-19 prior to the initiation of treatment.\u00a0 Out of 385 COVID-19 tests, only five had returned positive (1.3%), and all five positive patients were managed successfully.\u00a0 Furthermore, radiation medical personnel showed a positive testing rate of less than 1%.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCancer patients underwent a uniquely trying time during this pandemic,\u201d Dr. Dragun said. \u201cNavigating the complexities and anxieties surrounding <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cooperhealth.org\/services\/radiation-oncology\">radiation therapy<\/a> was particularly challenging in the environment of fear during the peak of COVID-19.\u201d The goal of this study was to identify patients who may have carried the virus but not know it, he said.\u00a0 The objective was to keep everyone\u2014patients, families, and staff\u2014safe, so that the patient\u2019s cancer care could be completed.<\/p>\n<p>Since many radiation patients are treated on a single machine, it is especially important to adhere to well-understood measures that prevent transmission in the care environment, Dragun said. \u201cWe\u2019ve always held to strict standards of quality and safety in the care of radiation patients.\u201d he said. \u201cSince we never closed our operations during the lockdown, we had to apply these ethics to the evolving risk of viral respiratory transmission.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dr. Dragun and his team identified populations of patients who may need special attention, such as those in underserved communities and also undergoing chemotherapy.\u00a0 \u201cWe believe that cancer centers should take pragmatic universal respiratory precautions during this pandemic.
