Cooper University Hospital is pleased to announce that for the second year in a row, the Society of Thoracic Surgeons has recognized the cardiac surgery program for outstanding performance. Last year, Cooper was among the top 14 percent in the nation and this year ranks in the top 12 percent \u2014 an exceptional improvement in overall performance.<\/p>\n
The \u201cThree Star\u201d rating that Cooper received places it in the highest quality tier of the Society of Thoracic Surgeons comprehensive rating system. This system compares the quality of cardiac surgery among hospitals across the country. All aspects of quality care in cardiothoracic surgery were measured, including compliance with recommended medical practices, prompt delivery of time-critical treatment, and availability of resources, staff performance and patient outcomes.<\/p>\n
\u201cThis is an outstanding achievement that could not have been accomplished without the dedication and hard work of the entire staff,\u201d said Michael Rosenbloom, MD, Head, Division of Cardiothoracic Surgery. \u201cNinety-one percent of coronary artery bypass surgery at Cooper was performed off-pump, which means that the patients\u2019 hearts were not stopped or placed on a heart-lung bypass machine. Nationally, only 21 percent of hospitals in the U.S. performed this surgery off-pump. These statistics represent the incredible work of the entire team at Cooper.\u201d<\/p>\n
Since Cooper\u2019s cardiothoracic surgeons, Michael Rosenbloom, MD, Richard Y. Highbloom, MD, and Frank W. Bowen, MD, arrived at Cooper in 2007, there have been dramatic decreases in blood utilization during and following surgery, translating in safer surgeries with fewer complications. They are performing innovative and complex procedures on a patient population that is often medically complex; and are achieving some of the best patient outcomes in the Delaware Valley.<\/p>\n
